Why do we abstain from meat on Lenten Fridays?

In our bible study the question came u “why do we abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during lent?”
There were various answers or opinions, but no one in the small group could come up with the real reason, or how it became one of our traditions.
Can someone tell us the historical background on this tradition.
