Why do we believe that Jesus is descended from David?

Bible prophecy is clear that the Messiah will be descended from the line of David – but Mary is not a descendent of David; Joseph is. but Joseph isn’t really Jesus’ father; God is. so why do we believe that Jesus is descended from David?
