Why do we call Mary the "Mother of God"?

I just suddenly had a question. Why is it that in the Hail Mary Prayer we refer to Mary as the “Mother of God” when we believe that she is actually only the Mother of Jesus?

I’m guessing “Mother of God” does not literally mean she gave birth to God but rather she is sort of the Mother of all of us under God. Like handmaiden of God. Mother of God.

Am I correct in my interpretation?

Thanks!
