If Jesus is the son of God why do we call him God?

Why does Jesus ask his father for our forgiveness if he is God?

These questions have confused me for a long time and would really love some clarity so that I can better defend my catholic faith.

Hi,

While Jesus is the Son of God, He is equal to the Father. He is not a son in the way that human sons have fathers. He was the Son of God for all eternity before He ever became man. Further, the love between Him and the Father has always been God, the Holy Spirit.
