Why do we even need August?

In as much as all but the first week of August has been gradually siphoned off the end of summer vacation (at least in my state), I see no point in having it at all. Can we just forget about it and go straight into September? My kids are napping and I can barely hear the sound of Dr. Phil over the pathetic gasping, grinder efforts of my poor air conditioner as it strains to make my home inhabitable. Therefore, I propose a thread where we dream of fall and all the beautiful things it brings. So here are the top ten reasons I love the fall.
  1. Open windows.
  2. I look awesome in sweaters.
  3. Mulled wine and hot apple cider, preferably with lemon wedges and stars of anise floating in it and making the whole house smell wonderful.
  4. Colorful leaves
  5. The crockpots bubbling on Bring-Your-Favorite-Soup-Day at the school where I work!
  6. The smell of firepits throughout the neighborhood.
  7. Actually wanting to be outside again.
  8. Taking pictures of my kids with pumpkins.
  9. Kettle corn.
  10. Hayrides, fall festivals, chilli suppers, trunk-or-treat, bonfires, my husband and kids’ birthdays, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and all the other get togethers!
So what do you like about the fall? (Please include recipes)

Its easier to find appropriate clothes for church! I go to the earliest AM mass just so I’m not sweating through my clothes during the homily.

What I like about fall, particularly late Sept and early Oct is the weather is perfect, warm during the day, cool at night. And baseball’s playoff start and hockey season begins. It’s the perfect storm of sports awesome. Also I’m fond of the build up toward the holiday season so there’s that as well.

I love the fall! Spiced cider, pumpkin-flavored everything, carving pumpkins (not good at it,but it makes me happy, lol), warm fires and the anticipation of the holiday season.

It is really hard not to eat all Halloween candy :D:D

I’m a big fan of baseball playoffs, hockey and football 👍

You must not live in the Pacific Northwest. July is a little better, but August is awesome here. Highs average low 80s or high 70s, overnight lows in the high 50s or low 60s. Humid days are rare, and even those wouldn’t pass as such in the Midwest or the South.

Yes, strawberries are over, but there are peaches. Beside, if it weren’t for August, we couldn’t grow a tomato here, let alone any wine grapes!

I’ll be ready for fall when August is over and Mt. Hood is looking brown, but not before that.

State Fair food! Fried dough! Fried ice cream! Fried Milky Ways! Fried EVERYTHING!

Amen.
It takes until August to dry up the ravages of November through June.😃
Much sympathy to Allegra for losing so much of the month to the school system- a take back August revolt is long overdue.
My favorite season is quite short, but bridges August (aka as summer in the PNW) and autumn beautifully: Indian Summer.
For a few days we have that glorious combination of warm and crisp. It doesn’t get any better. Such a wonderful time to be outdoors.

God made August so the good folks of South Africa could get some relief from the heat 🙂

Yep. I can agree with this. For me as a Vancouverite, spring and fall are perfect - not too cold and not too hot. The winter is constant cold rain (contrary to what most Americans believe, no not all of Canada is a winter wonderland…we almost never get snow in Vancouver) and the summer is too muggy for me.

What defines “hot” in Vancouver???:)🙂

Have you planted crocus, daffodil, tulip, and hyacinth bulbs in the Autumn?

Just turn offPhil the Shill! It will be sooooooooo much more enjoyable! 🙂

Extreme heat in August generally makes me hope it counts toward Purgatory.

Autumn comes around December when some deciduous trees turn gold, but that’s the only thing that looks like fall here. In September and October it can be very hot. Sometimes, November is as well.

Up in the mountains is where the beautiful colors come out. Towards Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon.

It has been consistently in the upper 90s around here. Two days out of the week we reach the 100s. Last Thursday the Heat Index was 117. I’m ready for the drop in temperature that Fall will bring. Plus, I can finally wear a suit without sweating horribly.

How could I forget Red October in my list?! What sort of Cardinals fan am I?

Agree.
The only good thing about August is my feast day.
Otherwise, yeah Dump it.
