Why do we get ashes on our foreheads?

Why do catholics get ashes put on their forheads, when the Lord specificaly said that when you do fast don’t let anyone know your fasting. I know the ashes are synonomous with our earthly lives and that from the earth we were made and to the earth we will return. But they are also synonmous with the start of lent and the whole knows what catholic’s do during lent, we fast. It just seems to contradict what the Lord is saying not to do?
