Why do we have holy days where they should not be?

Traditionally, Christ was said to have died on the same day He was conceived – March 25th. (And this was felt to have been significant, because obviously the Friday before Passover doesn’t fall on March 25th every year.) The date of Christmas was apparently derived from this traditional conception/death date.

This was also said to have been the anniversary of the day when the universe was created. Connections were drawn between God’s words, “Let there be light”, and Mary’s responsive words, “Let it be done to me according to Thy will.”

So yes, the Annunciation has a very intimate connection with Lent and Easter – as intimate as the connection between your conception and your life and death; or of God as Creator and Redeemer.

And there would be an awful lot of dry spells, since we have no record of what Christ was up to most years of his life.

Yeah. Ordinary Time would fall between the Presentation and the Finding of Jesus in the Temple (about 12 years) and then there would be a longer Ordinary Time between the Finding and the Baptism of Our Lord in year 30. That’s a lot of Green.

Of course, there is also the question of moving the date of the Solemnity of the Annunciation. During some years, it falls during Holy Week; in other years, it falls during the Octave of Easter. When that is the case, I believe that the solemnity is transferred to the following week. I could be wrong about the Octave, but, I do know that this is the case for Holy Week.
