Why do we need a Pope?

Christianity, from its onset has been a religion of “Apostolic Succession”. That is one reason why Jesus picked his Apostles and didn’t merely dictate or write the Bible, to be passed down as the only true source for our faith.

The Pope is the glue that has always held Christianity together. If it were not for the ‘Pope” there would be no Bible today nor would there be a religion called “Christianity”.

It is easy for “Christians” today to say things like “why do you need a Pope? However, without a central leadership and chain of command, the Catholic Church would have been wiped from the face of the earth, long before one was able to choose to be ‘Protestant”.

If the current Protestant model (of Christianity) were the only Christian model in use for the first 1500 years of Christianity, without a Pope, we would not be having this discussion today.

Please correct me if I am wrong

Look at the Eastern Orthodox, they have pretty much everything but the Pope and they’ve split along national lines, while still in full communion with each other the Patriarch of Constantinople really doesn’t have much say over what the Russians do etc. Also national churches are very wrong as they not only aren’t Catholic as the Church was created to be, plus they are often swayed by secular powers. Furthermore the Pope is a sign of which is the true Church as the Schismatic churches often disagree with each other, and it would otherwise be subjective which ones views are true and which are in error, what does the Eastern Orthodox Communion have that the Oriental Orthodox don’t, etc.

Anyway just my thoughts, there’s a lot more to it than that, but the Orthodox churches are the best place to look to see what happens if you remove a valid church from full communion with the Pope, rather than protestants which lack a lot more

We could ask, why did we need Satan? Without Satan, Adam and Eve would not have sinned, and there would be no need for Jesus to make atonement for our sins. What would be better, no Satan and no Jesus, or Satan and Jesus? Apparently God thought the latter was better, even though Satan won’t last forever and Jesus will.

So I don’t know if this is a very good argument for the Pope.

Hello JMBNH, thank you for your post.

In a sense, the Eastern Orthodox Church today does have their own “pope”, what does “first among equals” mean?

At any rate, this thread is directed towards 'protestant " Christians and their view of the Roman Catholic Pope.

The Eastern Orthodox Church is “catholic” and one day, hopefully we will share one Pope and one faith in full communion.
