CAF is a CATHOLIC website. Why do we need a forum for non-catholics to question, bash and abuse us? We will never convince any of the non-believers of the tenets of our faith. They will never convince us to become Buddhists, Mormons, atheists, Baptists, etc. It’s just a “yes you are”, “no you’re not” discussion. I think this section draws us like a car wreck. I don’t see many “non-baptist” sections in their websites. Just my opinion and I could be wrong.

To be open, as Christ would want us, to those that are not Catholic. We would be no better than some of the other forums that we have talked about here if we didn’t allow people of other denominations in.

I, myself, love the fact that we can talk with other denominations here. Or even other non-Christian faiths. It’s a good thing to learn from others. 🙂

To learn what one is, it can be useful to learn what one is not.

I agree it’s nice to learn about various beliefs. Besides that where would the less than perfect Catholics post who the perfect call non? 😃

The Church was commissioned with professing The Gospel to all four corners of the Earth and make disciples of all in existence!..not hide or shy away from the ‘stone throwers’ of non-believers or dissenters.

Our first Pope also taught that we “…should answer with charity, those who question the faith within us…”

In here, the spectrum of those ‘questions’ are manifested…and those learning are not always outside the tenets of Catholicism; like me.

I have actually seen a few people that were protestants when I first joined “swim the Tiber” so its not impossible.

I, for one non Catholic Christian here, Wont likely convert but I have learned a lot about Catholics by being here and also a lot about my own faith that I would not have learned without CAF. So I’m posting to say I’m grateful that Non-Catholic Religions forum is here and that there are Catholics willing to irritate and argue with me. 😛 (Grateful to the nice ones too! :D)

I’m glad that there’s a place for everyone here at CAF. 🙂

It should be noted, too, that the “Non-Catholic Religions” forum isn’t merely a place for non-Catholics to congregate. It is also a place for Catholics to go and ask questions about other faiths. Of course, as with any of the sub-forums here at CAF, we would do well to ignore those who are only interested in starting fights.

We don’t allow anyone to abuse anyone on CAF. If you see someone being abusive report him to the moderators.
We will never convince any of the non-believers of the tenets of our faith.
But we have. Not that that is the only reason why the forum has the NC forum, but we have.
They will never convince us to become Buddhists, Mormons, atheists, Baptists, etc. It’s just a “yes you are”, “no you’re not” discussion.
Maybe not, but shouldn’t we let others speak for themselves–to tell us what they actually believe/practice? We Catholics hate it when others misrepresent us and don’t allow us to speak for ourselves. Shouldn’t we extend charity to all or should we only extend it to those who believe/practice like us?
I think this section draws us like a car wreck.
No doubt some do read/post for this reason. They don’t usually last long, though. Rubbernecking isn’t a good foundation for discussion.
I don’t see many “non-baptist” sections in their websites.
I can’t speak for any other forum but if other forums aren’t interested in hearing what others have to say about their beliefs/practices why should we follow suit? Especially if you see this as a failing?
Just my opinion and I could be wrong.
I understand your frustration. No one likes to have his most cherished beliefs denied/debated. Our emotions and self-identity are too tied up in them to be happy about it. But, apologetics is all about being challenged and having an answer. Our job isn’t to convince anyone of anything, but rather to be a witness to what we know to be true. What more can we do than that (besides pray for everyone who reads/posts here)?

Yes, this is a Catholic website. I joined a few years ago as a way to ask questions and learn more, as my wife is a cradle Catholic with a very weak faith. She couldn’t answer the many questions I had, so I came here. 99% of the time, my postings are friendly and reflect “ah ha” moments where I learn something new about the Catholic faith. 1% of my postings may be criticisms of CAF members who slam other members (even fellow Catholics). For example, this thread regarding a person who felt that a requested fee for an annulment was exorbitant:

OP: My fiance finally has the paperwork done for his annulment (been 1 year in the making!) and before the church sends it off to the archdiocese they ask for a $500 fee! I think that is ridiculous. We are not rich people and to pay that much only to still have it take 12-15 months to go through the system is crazy. They give you the option of paying all, some or none. What if we choose none? Does that mean that goes to the bottom of the pile and the people who paid $500 get top service? What if we pay the $500, does that mean they’ll push it through. We are very fed up with the process.
Poster 2: What a bunch of whining you are doing…go to Confession and repent for your sinful, bitter attitude.
Poster 3: …but it really would be a shame to cheat a church for your own selfish reasons…
Poster 4: The nerve you have to expect the Church to foot the bill for your “fiance’s” annulment. I’d be willing to bet that you will probably spend more on beer/wine for your wedding. I guess the inconvience of doing what is RIGHT is too much to bother with. PUT ON YOUR BIG GIRL PANTIES AND DEAL WITH IT! How selfish and immature of you~shame on you! You SHOULD WANT fiance to be clear to marry you properly instead of whinning about the cost. IMHO, they should charge way more considering how much work goes into it. Quit whining and pay up.
Poster 5: Hmmmmmm!!! … Guess we all have our opinions and priorities…
My response: Posters, so much for showing Christ’s love. If you’re going to be critical, at least be tact about it. Just look at the path of destruction y’all have left behind. OP, you have my love and prayers. I can see how confusing it can be when they pressure you to donate an amount, but give you several choices. Please pray about it and I hope the Holy Spirit guides you to the answer. It is your annulment, your beliefs, and your life. Don’t let these Monday morning armchair quarterbacks get you down and make you feel worthless, just because you ask a few questions.

I don’t see as much of this car wreck carnage that you are referring to. I do see a handful of Catholics on here who seem to have a persecution complex. It could be (IMHO) that they take any criticism of Catholicism personally. 🤷 Of course, non-Catholics will tell you that they are criticizing the CC, not the person…but it’s not as if the two are mutually-exclusive in that regard. You are correct about at least one Baptist forum I know of. They used to allow Catholics, but after some event years ago…they banned them. THEY deem who is Christian and who is not (Catholics are not Christian, in the moderators’ definitions). They have debate forums, but don’t allow anyone but Baptists and a handful of other Protestant denominations to post there; what kind of debate is that?!?

I hope you reported that thread to the moderator. People shouldn’t jump on others like that.

And I certainly wouldn’t lay the decisions of one Baptist website on you as a Baptist or on Baptists in general. I wouldn’t even suggest you complain to them about it. After all, it’s their website so they can make the rules. Having said that, do you feel they ought to do as CAF does and let non-Baptists speak for themselves? I think it’s too bad. There’s so much Catholics hold in common with Baptists, especially pro-life issues. Their being so exclusive sends the message that they’re afraid of something. Maybe they aren’t, but it does rather come across that way. Then again, if they aren’t primarily an apologetics forum, I can see why they would want to restrict their membership.

Justin Mee,

I joined CAF in May of 2009. I have had a long struggle in the Prostestant Sector–grew up in Baptist Churches.

When I began to really study and question things, I found my questions were not well received in my own Church.

I desperately needed to find a place to openly ask questions, and discuss issues. I found such a place, here. As I have said many times, CAF has been a lifeline for me, when I needed it most.

As with Syele, I can’t really see myself converting to Catholicism (though I ask many questions, prayerfully consider your beliefs, won’t say never); but I’ve certainly learned from all of you, and have developed a great respect for Catholics.

EmergencyOps,

Good to bump into you again. I’ve had a number of those “ah-ha” moments myself. There are really quite refreshing.

Anna

If we didn’t have one, I don’t think I would be here. How boring it is to sit around patting each other on the back all day? You don’t really know what you believe until/unless you have to explain it to someone else, and defend it from detractors. Each opportunity is a gift from God.

I rather like hearing the Orthodox traditions, the Protestant point of view, and corrections from the Mormons, JWs, & SDAs.

This is a* commercial forum-*-notice the .com not .org. It is one of many forums run by the forum.com people. It profits by ads, which companies place here because of the large number of hits. Observe that the Non-Catholic Forum gets a lot of hits. Many of the other sub-forums don’t–like "Vocations, for ex, which comes and goes.

Forums thrive on controversy; the more controversial the subject, the greater the number of posts, the larger the number of hits, the more likely that the ads are seen, and that companies will pay money to the forum to place ads on it.

Heavily edited and moderated forums don’t do as well. People are shut out of them, one way or another. On Phatmass.com, for example, another commercial Catholic forum, posters can vote on how they feel about individual posts. Members have a Score and a Rating. Phatmass is much smaller than this forum, and I suspect, far less successful.

Whenever Paul entered a city he went to the synagogue to discuss scriptures with anyone who would listen. When he went to Athens he stood in the middle of the Areopagus and began to proclaim the gospel. To win the Jews he became as the Jew, to win the pagan he became as a pagan.
The internet is like a synagogue or the Areppagus. This is a great place to discuss what we have in common and what divides us. We need to welcome even those that hate us.

And I thought the Internet was a Googlesin.

I do feel that they should allow Catholics to post on their boards. They post questions like, “What contributions have Catholics made to theology?” and opinions expressed there include: “none whatsoever”, “false doctrines, idol worship”, and the like. There are a few Catholic-supporters on there, but they quickly become overwhelmed by ignorance and hateful rhetoric. The moderators get into the debates and close threads readily. One moderator even had this to say: “And when you take the “Eucharist” you don’t need to worry about how the Lord handles the ingested elements, because HE doesn’t! This age old belief of the RCC is very much like cannibalism if taken literally. But since the one taking it really believes it is flesh and blood when it isn’t, the common person in today’s society would label you a sociopath. Truly believing bread is flesh and ought to taste that way, when indeed it is only bread–someone needs a break! Describe it to a doctor, he will say you need help. Yet this is what the RCC believes. It is not what the Apostles believed, nor what Christ taught. He was not a lunatic.” Plus, if they can’t get past something that happened a few years ago involving one or two Catholic members (the alleged reason behind the ban), they should really re-examine themselves and their website.

With forum sections such as Baptist Theology & Bible Study, Bible Versions/Translations (both of which fall under the category of Baptist Debate Forums), Missions/Witnessing/Evangelism, Other Christian Denominations, and Baptist History…one would think that Catholics would have a vested interest in what was being said and what was being proclaimed as Catholic beliefs.

EmergencyOps,

I am really glad you are, here. If there were more Baptists like you, I might not be working on my formal resignation letter to the Baptist Church holding my membership.

In Christ,
Anna

To give our non-catholic brothers and sisters in Christ (as well as our brothers and sisters not yet fully open to the truth of Christ) a place to post their thoughts and comments. For us Catholics it’s also a great place to lurk and learn, or participate, discuss if we want.

I think it’s a wonderful idea to have this forum and would be greatly saddened if it dissapeared.
