I’m wondering why the Catholic Church ordains it’s priests because 1 Peter 2:9 states ‘But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.’ If we are all priests, then why do Catholic priests need to be ordained?

A quick answer to your question is, “for the same reason there were ordained priests in the Old Testament.” It is interesting that you reference 1Peter2:9 because that text is a quote from Exodus 19:6. The Israelites were a universal priesthood, but yet God willed to have an ordained priesthood with specific ministries that minister to the flock.

I would argue that St. Peter’s quotation of Exodus 19:6 is a hint that the same is true for the New Israel of God (see Gal 6:16). Like it was for Israel, there is a distinct ordained ministerial priesthood within the universal priesthood of Jesus Christ.
