Why do we pray to Mary?

Hello All!

I am a Recent Convert/Returning to the Catholic Religion. I was Baptized and Confirmed Catholic as a child. I recently requested my Certified copies of both. My Confirmation Certificate did not include a Confirmation Name? Is that an omission or something I can do at a later date?

In addition, I’m still not absolutely clear on why we pray to Mary. Is she alive and in heaven? :confused:
