Why do we refer to Jesus as the Son of David?

In a really good Theology course and the Duoye Rheims Bible (not sure it is spelled correctly), the line of David goes from Abraham to St. Joseph…not Mary. I also know that they do not name women in the linage of the geneology. But the lineage would, I would think, go to Joachim who is the father of Mary who begot Jesus. Jesus is not the blood of Joseph, but He is begotten by the Holy Spirit.
I realize it refers to Jesus as the Son of David, as the King of the Jews (which I truthfully agree with).
I would just like to know why and how this came to be.

Once more, I am not arguing the point. I would sincerely like to know how it came to be.

Matt 19:5 says, “And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?” Joseph was Mary’s lawful husband, and Jesus was born after they were married. Because of this, Jesus is the lawful heir to the throne of David. BTW - some women are mentioned in genealogies (Matthew’s genealogy mentions Tamar, Rachab, Ruth, and even mentions ‘her [that had been the wife] of Urias’). You might also notice that the genealogy in Matthew differs from that in Luke (though both end with Joseph). As mentioned before (Matt 19:5) husband and wife become “one flesh”, and their individual genealogies combine. One of these was passed to Joseph by his father. The other was either passed on to Mary, or by way of Joseph’s mother (the names of Mary’s parents come from a gnostic work written around the year 150. Doesn’t make it wrong, just questionable). Either way, both genealogies combine in Joseph, and, therefore, are passed on to Jesus.

The Son of David is a prophetic title for the coming Messiah. It is a title, not a literal thing. For example, in one of the gospel stories, a man called out to Jesus, “Son of David, have pity on me!” Everyone around him was yelling at him to SHUT UP! Can you guess why they were annoyed? It was because of the Messianic title he was using. He was proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah, and it scared the people around him, who didn’t want to get into trouble with the Pharisees and the Romans.

An adopted son has all the legal rights of a natural son, according to Jewish Law. In Matthew’s geneaology, you see all the lineage following the man. This was to show that Jesus fulfilled the Messianic prophecies given to David. “A root, from the stump of Jessie”. Jessie was David Father. They called it a stump, because it was assumed the line of David was cut off. Matthew shows that Jesus is the true Son of David.
