Why Do We Take The Bible Literally ?

For example, using the word “cousin”, where in fact it is brother?
Matthew 16:18
It does refer to Peter, when He says, “You are Peter and upon this rock,” He (Jesus) changes tense for obvious reasons that are demanded by the use of the Greek language and the modifying terms. He is talking about Peter and what He is saying is, “Peter, I’m going to build My church on you in this sense, the fact that you are articulating the truth. I’m not going to build it on your office, I’m not going to build it on your rank, I’m not going to build it on your worthiness, I’m not going to build it on your talent. No, I’m going to build the church on you because you are affirming the foundational truth of the church, namely that I am the Christ the Son of the living God.”

I think it’s important to point out that this isn’t just another case of already-skeptical Jews hearing Jesus say something and then walking away in disgust.

In John 6:66, it says many of Jesus’ disciples left him. Those who already followed him, who were already listening to his teachings. They “returned to their former way of life.” If Jesus was symbolically suggesting that they should continue to follow him, this probably would not have happened. In John 5:23-24, he already said to follow him, but nobody is mentioned leaving then.
Your comment just triggered something in my head. Because of this the “disciples left him”.

Doesn’t that mean that those who do not accept this teaching have also LEFT HIM? 🙂 Just a thought.

Scripture states that the Apostles ARE the foundation of the Church… Christ is the cornerstone. I recommend doing a personal study on Church authority- and try it with an open mind, not so as to disprove it, but with an open mind. You’ll find the hierarchy present- Paul even threatens in various places. We see Bishops and deacons and tithing oh my- Its there!

🙂

Open mind? That might be asking for too much. But then again, miracles have happened.🙂

I don’t rightly know. This is a very good question. I take the Bible just as the Holy Spirit discerns it to me.
How sure are you that it is the Holy Spirit guiding you? The devil have been known to guide people you know.

You misunderstand the Gospel. One is saved through faith in Christ. One goes to hell for unbelief. The penalty for sin is death, which was imputed to us by one man (Adam), but where you go depends on what you do with the revelation God has given each individual…what you do with that truth will determine your destiny.
Au contraire. It is you who misunderstand the Gospel.
One part of the Bible says that we are saved through faith in Christ but another says it is by what we do to the least of our brother. In Matthew 25:31-46 it is not faith in Jesus that saves those who go to heaven but rather it is what they did. Because the good work they did, they did to Jesus. Or have you not read that part of Matthew?

But I heartily agree that what where you go depends on what you do with the revelation of God. Now that to me sounds like a Gospel that includes works:D .

Yes, you keep affirming our position though you do not see it.😃

Good question. I guess you could ask that same question to the magisterium of the Catholic church.

Aaaahhh! But compared to you, Christ actually gave the promise to the Church that she will be guided by the Holy Spirit so that the gates of hell will not prevail.
And you know what, when Christ said that we believed Him and continue to believe Him. Christ never lies and Christ always keeps His promise.

You are right, he does keep his promises and the gates of Hell will not prevail against his Church. His Church is not an institution or did I miss where he called his Church the Roman Catholic church in Matthew?

There was no other church to distinguish it from back then. No adjectives required.

And to call it “Roman” probably wouldn’t have made the least bit of sense in Jesus’ time. 😉

I wonder…if Jesus meant it to be figurative, why don’t Christians throw their Bibles in disgust and quit Christianity when they get to this verse, considering it was Jesus’ disciples who left him in John? Why don’t we see the same reaction from his followers nowadays?

If every Bible clearly described it as literal eating, though, I think we’d have that reaction more often. 😃

It doesn’t make the least bit of sense in this time either.

They don’t need to throw away their Bibles. They can just conveniently ignore the “hard passages”. And blast those pesky Catholics who keep reminding them of these hard passages.😃

Watch out, here it comes!! They’re refuting the Gospel with a passage from Paul.

Well, how about the fact that until 1500 there was only one Church then come the “reformation” voila! Not a multiplication of loaves and fishes but a multiplication of … churches!

Here is a little timeline and diagram for you

Your signature indicates that you are Anglican. Now, in terms of rites this may be the closest to the Catholic Church but really in terms of reason for separating, they have the worst. Yes, let us leave Christ’s Church because I want to divorce my wife says it’s head. If you look at it logically, the Anglican church’s reason for existence was sin. At least Luther, et al had a “nobler stated” reason. And I write “stated” because the real reason me thinks is far from noble.

You cannot compare the Angels with the redemption of man, so you start with a fallacy. Angels cannot be redeemed as man can be…right?

Your knowledge of Scripture is poor at best, for example on “working out your own salvation”…is Paul talking to believers or unbelievers? It refers to the sanctification process, not justification, but you must put things into context.

How do you “feel” about the RCC? How do you feel about it’s traditions? How to you feel about the validity of Scritpure?
noncatholic,

You are correct angels can’t be compared to the redemption of mankind I was trying to get my point across.

However and no mater how you may look at it, satan had a Grace in heaven and lost it. So we too can have Grace and loose it!

Noncatholic, what kind of Christian are you if you believe that no one can loose there Grace and be thrown to hell?

Do you believe you can commit all kinds of sin like abortion, murder, steal, lie, etc…do you think you can break all of the Ten Commandments and still claim that you have Grace and if you die tomorrow and without confession you believe you will still make it to heaven?

Did not Judas the betrayer loose his Grace? Indeed he fail from Grace.

In John 6:66 these diciples that left Jesus Christ and followed him no more did these not loose the Grace? Scripture says of these Disciples they followed Jesus no more.

Sia,

Please, don’t fight against the True Church My suggestion to you is if you can’t beat it, join it.

The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ,

not by the king of England with his Murderous hands now what church did he start?

I am sure his church was not mentioned in the Bible.

You do know that this is about the Second Coming…right?

And in the same way that a shepherd would sort his sheep from his goats, so the Lord Jesus Christ in His coming will separate believers from unbelievers, believers to be taken into His Kingdom to join the glorified saints out of the Old Testament, Tribulation and the church who are going to be there in glorified form with new bodies fit for earth and heaven. He’s going to take those who are living who are represented here as sheep into His Kingdom as well. The goats are put out of His Kingdom.

Now notice verse 33 and see this analogy taken a step further. “He shall set the sheep on His right hand, the goats on His left.” Now this tells us something right away. The right hand is the hand of blessing. The right hand is the hand of honor. The right hand is the hand of inheritance. That is the preferred hand. The sheep here are preferred in the analogy. They are submissive, they are gentle, they are docile. The goats are unruly and rough and rugged and so forth and they represent those who are the non‑blessed.

How do you define grace? There is a common grace, the rain falls on the crops of the believers field and the unbelievers field next door. There is saving grace, this is the type I am speaking of. Angels have no saving grace, this is unique to mankind. No one can loose their salvation once they have it for it is a gift of God…God doesn’t take back that which he gives. The real question is…were they saved in the first place.

Personally, I have been given much grace because of all the sinful things I did in the past against people and God; and I thought I was a good person compared to others. During that time, it was God’s common grace that I experienced, now I have both saving grace and common grace and I praise God for that.
