Because, if you walk barefoot on coarse gravel it hurts your feet. Shoes can be functional, stylish, or both. They can also be not very functional, not stylish, or both.

Men have, like, 4 styles of shoes - sandals, dress shoes, sneakers, and boots. Which come in black, blue, brown and grey… so perhaps it isn’t that men don’t like shoes but that women have so many more reasons to like shoes. 🤣

You must not be around young men very much. I worked in an office of my peers (Latter millennials–22-30). Guys often had more varied shoe styles and interesting colors–not bright ones but neat textures and less traditional shaping and height. Woman’s shoes tended to be more classical–be it “fancy” shoes, tall boots or sneakers. And always red/white/pink and bright. One of the guys had these awesome “loafters” that were leather but had flame-stripes. Never saw a woman with anything like that.

That’s a stereotype based on a bygone culture.

Both men and women these days seem equally invested in shoes and styles.
I have been in a lot of houses as a result of my job. Think we’re not at parity yet.
It really depends on the age…Boomers–yeah, but X and millennial have really changed that. My mom has many more shoes than my dad, but my male cousins have just as many shoes as my female cousins. And we’re not really even talking utilitarian “guys do more active outdoor stuff” snowboots/skiboots/snowboard boots vs 3 pairs of dress shoes.

I don’t rally get it myself. Perhaps because I always had a difficult size to find and hence never had a lot of shoes. 😜

I feel the same way about purses too, but lately I have come around and seen some I actually like.

I can’t afford many pairs of shoes. End of story .I see plenty I like, just can’t get them.

Can’t wear heels, but my favorite footwear would be those that are so very comfortable including work boots and 'Gumboots ’ (rubber boots ,wellies)

I have to ask, does the OP like shoes?🙂

I probably have what most would consider an unhealthy relationship with shoes! I had a lot (and I mean A LOT) when my job required me to go into the office everyday. Now that I work from home, I’ve weeded out my collection. But it’s probably still more than most.

puts 100 dollars down to see that backed up with an Official Scientific Shoe Study{trademark}

Anyway, the reason women own more shoes on average (or articles of clothing in general) is because they’re more invested in their appearance than men are on average. The cosmetic industry makes billions of dollars a year on this and it extends to fashion as well. You also see this manifest itself in more radical terms through eating disorders, the vast majority of which are diagnosed to vulnerable young women.

Now, because within contemporary post-Christian Western society, there is a drive to deconstruct & reconstruct the sexes, you will continue to see the disparity in these patterns lessen. I recall reading not so long ago how cosmetic companies are attempting to sell a new line of cosmetic products for men. Once a genie leaves a bottle it is difficult to put him back in. Something that comes to mind is that if you go to Africa, you will find an entire line of products marketed as “Skin Lighteners”. The underlying idea being that light skin is beautiful and dark skin is not. It has been sold for decades and although there is much push to remove the products, now that they are mainstream, it is difficult for them to go away.

[I don’t have anything against somebody owning multiple pairs of shoes btw. If somebody wants a pair of shoes for every color of the rainbow purely for aesthetics and to have variety in their wardrobe it’s 100% fine.]

I know exactly what you mean, and I feel the same. I’m not Peggy Hill but shoes in my size are fairly limited. As for purses, even though I’ve had them all my life (and I’m 61), with the exception of one I actually picked out for myself 8 years ago (there’s a first time for everything) the ones I have had, have all been gifts, reflective of other people’s tastes. Some were OK, some were “thank you” and carried a few times, and some were “No, really, you shouldn’t have”. But I’ve seen a couple of decent purses of late years.

No, because my 5 years older sister, who has exactly the same shoe size, has always managed to have 5 times as many shoes as I do, and about 10 times as many purses. (She used to get a lot of her ‘fancy’ shoes through Fredericks of Hollywood back in the day; I just couldn’t even look at the magazine let alone order from it though by today’s standards what it showed back in the 70s and 80s was probably pretty tame).

Oh if ONLY.
No, and if you promise you won’t laugh, I wear an 11WW. Thanks, kids. I wore a 9-1/2 medium before I had children!!
