Why do women journal so much more than men?

And to what end exactly? It seems that from my observations, women do diaries and journaling much more than men. Isn’t this so. I think part of why I ask this is that I see young women journaling during eucharistic adoration or just sitting and writing in the church very often. Is it something different about the brain or personality of a woman versus a man that they journal and men do so to a much lesser degree?

Is this something men really ought to do more? What is the end goal exactly? I guess partly I’m curious what the heck these young women are writing about as they sit there before the blessed sacrament. It’s many questions rolled into one, so feel free to answer all or just one of my questions.

It being a campus parish, I think that FOCUS might encourage or suggest journaling in their minsitry and discipleship and it’s the women that acutally take it up.

I think it’s a difference in physiology.

Women in general are more language oriented, whereas men in general are more action oriented.

This is maybe why women will stop and ask for directions – talk, talk, talk – and men will just keep going – action, action, action.

They’re both good in their own way, and they can both be used to excess, and men and women have both of these within them.

But in general, again, I think women are just more hard-wired for language and verbal communication, both written and spoken.

Just my two cents’. I’m no scientist. 😃

I think Gertabelle is probably correct. However, even though I know plenty of women who journal, and I am a woman, the idea doesn’t do much for me.🤷 So I suspect it is one of those things that are generally true, but not for absolutely everybody. Women are generally more verbal, though, and somewhere in that generalization is the main reason.

I think also because journaling is a “thing” that girls do and not a “thing” that guys do. People associate with the teenage “Dear Diary, today Jason looked at me, I think he likes me!” thing. It wasn’t that way in the past of course. But now it’s just not something guys consider as a thing to do I suppose.

Oh, and I am one of those women who sometimes - rarely - write in a journal while in the presence of Our Lord. Sometimes writing just helps me to quiet my mind. It’s as though writing it down purges my brain of the tangle of thoughts, especially when I just can’t let something go.

Also, I rarely – like once every few years – will read anything I’ve ever written down in a journal. The value for me is in the writing. I’ve never seen any point in reading what I’ve written in the past. 🤷

It is also, possible that she is writing prayers or meditations in her “journal.” For some this may be a way of "praying “out loud” via pen and paper. Unless one can see over the person’s shoulder and read what is written I wouldn’t call it a journal. Hard to determine what she is writing. Peace.

I don’t think that men tend to be as introspective or self-questioning as women tend to be - if I can be excused a generalization.

I journal to relieve myself of thoughts. I am an expressive person by nature. If I let things stay in my head my anxiety gets worse.

I journal as a part of my daily meditation. It helps me to put my thoughts on paper, or in my case I use a journaling app on my phone. Often when I write the ideas I was thinking about suddenly become much clearer. I am also a visual person so if I don’t see something in writing I don’t remember it.

I do go back and read my old journal entries occasionally, mainly when I feel discouraged and think I am not growing spiritually. When I look back at what I wrote six months ago or a year ago I can usually see some progress, however slow it may be.

@ Schrodinger’s cat

I am actually considering it at the moment just to perhaps work out some issues that I have been struggling with spiritually and otherwise.
