Why do you believe in your religion?

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. I am trying to get a better understanding of how people come to believe in their particular religious beliefs. For example, why do you believe in God or Christianity? Why do you believe in your particular church and what church is it? How did you come to believe it was true, more true, or the only true church over any other church? Did you pray about it and how did you receive an answer? If this wasn’t the method used, how did you come to your particular belief? There is an enormous amount of christian churches to choose from. Each have the same common belief in God and the Bible but none of them interpret all of it the same. If they did, then there wouldn’t be separate churches.
 
First I am Catholic. Why do I believe in the Catholic Religion?

The Catholic Church was started by Jesus who appointed Peter, the Rock, to build His (Jesus) Church upon. The Catholic Church can trace it’s Roots, (History) way back to Jesus, with plenty of proof. So why wouldn’t I want to be a memeber of the Church Jesus started? The Catholic Church has many other things in her, such as The Mass, the Real Presence of Jesus in Our Communion, and much more. We (the Catholic Church) have the Full Truths and teach the Full Truths.

Given I have said that, I also want to say that I believe there are Many Christians out there in other Churchs that are seperated from the Catholic Church, who truely have a love and devotion to Our Lord. Some of the Non-Catholic Churchs teach many of the things that the Catholic Church teaches; however; they don’t teach or beleive **all **the same things that the Church that Jesus started does. Are they still Christians, of course they are.

The Catholic Church beleives in the same things the Non-Catholic Churchs believe in. (a added note: what I mean by that is the Trinity, ect.) Yet, we (the Catholic Church) just beleive in more things, than most Non-Catholic Churchs. Why? Because that’s what Jesus, Peter, Paul, ect. taught. so we stick to it.

Why do you believe in Christianity at all though? For example I am most familiar with the LDS though I am not one myself. They believe in it because they pray about it and say they feel the holy ghost bare witness to them that it is true. Does your church do the same or something similar? I am also curious as to what other churches view of the holy ghost is. Do they believe it’s a feeling or what?
 
I don’t consider myself any particular religion, though I’ve attended Unitarian Universalist services for about 2 years.

I believe in a Divinity, though I can’t really tell you much about It. I think that It is omnipotent, possibly omniscient, and probably good.

Why?

I was a Catholic and after about a year of fervant prayer that the Lord show me what to do in my life, the Holy Spirit visited me and led me to the Seventh Day Adventist church. In this church I have come to realize that everything that I need for salvation is in the bible and the bible, the whole bible, is about Jesus, and any church or doctrine that preaches something that is not in the bible or is contrary to what the bible teaches is a false church.
In this church I have come to realize the importance of keeping God’s law and not the law of man. For these reasons I believe that the LDS church because they teach that Jesus was a created being and Satan’s brother and any church that teaches that God’s commandment to keep the Sabbath has been changed cannot be the true church. Because Jesus who gave us the commandments changes not. Heb.13: 8Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
 
First of all I have to say that in order to make this arguement we will have to agree that there is indeed a God. For me this is self evident, the world that we live in, all the wonders of creation and all the amazing events that take place each day that many of us take for granted all point to the existance of a supreme being, aka God.

So, if it is a given that God does exist and that He created us, it also seems to me that He would want to help us to get along in this world and to show us the waynto true salvation. Enter Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of Man. The lessons that Christ taught us during his life time and the wisdom that He left us with tell me one of two things must be true. Either Jesus was the most amazing human being that ever lived and possessed more wisdom then anybody that lived before him or has lived since him and we should all live as He taught us if for no other reason then it is the right thing to do. Or, Jesus was indeed God because no simple human could be all that He was, and is. I choose to believe the second, that Jesus Christ is God and that he did die for our salvation and that He did rise from the dead.

Now, I am that far, I believe that Jesus is God, therefore I am a Christian. Why am I a Catholic? Simple, why not go with the best? The first Christian Church, founded by Christ and left in the hand of His hand picked representative on Earth, Peter. From Peter, we can trace the line of Popes to our present day Pope Benadict. No other Church can make this claim. Christ gave us his Church, The Church, with the divine inspiration of God gave us the Bible, and that is what the Roman Catholic Church teaches and that is what I follow.

Other Christian Churches have broken away from the True Church and from each other. Those are acts of men and are usually due to prideful thinking and petty differences.

Wow, alot of questions each requiring many book length pages to express.

As a convert to the Catholic Faith I can say that it was history that most brought me home. The Catholic Church can trace her roots to the very beginning of Christianity to Jesus Himself. Read the ECF and they will show Just how accurate this is.

Now as to believing in God, that was my first hurdle. I finally came to realize, AFTER I started thinking with my brain, that life had to have had a Beginning and that the incredible balance of nature and the universe could not have happened by “chance” or continue for that matter without a power greater then it.

Now as for praying and getting a “feeling” that you are on the correct faith path. Feelings are totally subjective and change often for many reasons, a dangerous thing to base your faith on. I sometimes pray and get NO feeling of any kind (like my personal walk in the desert if you will) but that does not mean I am in the wrong church or that God does not exist. I base my faith on the TRUTH of Jesus Christ and the knowledge that He started His Church on earth, chose Peter to lead His flock as the Head of His earthly Church and through the Holy Spirit, continues His Church here on earth.

If I were to base my faith on how I felt during prayer, it would be lot being tossed on a wild sea with no anchor to ground me. I put my trust in Jesus not my feelings which are subject to change.

I believe in the one soverign true God and it is through my church that it amplifies and directs my worship and perspectives. I believe first. And then secondly, it is through my church and my community of worship that the focus is sharpened. Scripture tells us that the Church is the pillar of truth.
 
It is through the framwork and word traditions of Quakerism that I have come to frame my religious beliefs…the Society of Friends have given me the tools to seek to know God and come to believe in the work of God in Christ to make my life whole and give it some meaning in a world that is not always kind.

I have come to believe in Christ through immediate experience with the Eternal. I have sat in the Presence in meeting and been ministered to through those who have been led to provide vocal ministry. The questions of “What is the church”…“When did it begin”…“Is the Bible true”…“Who is Christ”…“What is my required response to God”…“How should I live in this world”…“Who do I turn to when the pressures of life and pain of our human existence sometimes feel overwhelming”…“Where is peace found”…“What is our response to death and loss in our lives”…Among Friends, I have found those answers.
 
Evidence. I studied and found the the CC is the church that Jesus founded.

Ultimately, we can’t prove (in a scientific way) that God is God or even that God exists. I believe that Jesus is God on faith.

That sounds too uncertain to a lot people who don’t believe. They believe in love, though, and can’t explain what it is, much less prove that it exists. And many others, when shown what others consider proof of love, will see only self-interest. (The theory that we do everything, including charitable acts, for our own benefit.)
 
It all begins with faith. For me a force, supreme being (I call this being, God) had to be involved in all this Creation we see. Then faith becomes even more important. Christian Scripture true or just an elaborate made up story? On faith I believe in Christ and His message. Still working on the rest. 🙂
 
I believe in Catholicism because it has power to defeat all evil.
 
I sort of like the Catholic potluck dinners as opposed to the Protestant ones I had before. More of a variety in culture in regard to foods. 😛
