Why do you catholics say the same prayers every sunday?

IMHO, i doubt that your sister’s complaints are really about prayer. I can almost guarantee that if you answer her complaints she will come back with another irrelevant one. We should pray that the Holy Spirit touches her because often times words are not enough to bring down unintelligible walls.

Also, another note, you say that she is simplistic in her thought, but once she starts making claims about this or that, she will either have to do the study work and back up her claims to which we have many answers from our gifted apologists on here or she will have to rely on ‘feelings’ at which again, you reach a point where words dont do that much good although we can pray they eventually penetrate.
 
Maybe I am wrong, but it also does not seem as if you sister knows the bible very well. (Hard to believe but some Protestants don’t:D ) She also seems caught up on the style of worship rather than the content. She makes the assumption that many ex-Catholics make and think that since she did not worship with her heart, no one else does either. (And she is surrounded by like-minded people).

But I also agree with a poster who mentioned the difficulties of learning with small children around.

My advice? When she talks again about repetiveness, bring up scripture, like Jesus in the Garden and prayed the same prayer 3 times and revelations which both show God likes repetitive prayer.

Or conversely, try this one.

Sometimes people just want to debate and don’t really want to listen to what you have to say. They are thinking of an answer without actually listening to what you have to say. A good way to stop this is to refuse to engage in it, but make sure your opinion, at the most basic, is heard. I disagree.

When she is ready, she will finally ask why. When she does this, she may be ready to listen. And then you can bring up scripture.

I disagree. It is very powerful and can stop someone on a full fledged rant. Try it:D
 
so my protestent sister has used this new situation as the launching pad for her rant (every time we talk) about how stupid it is that mass is the same thing every week. How she feels like the fly by the seat of my pants prayer is much better for church and is more uplifting. She said that every time she hears catholics praying in church, it sounds like they are just reciting a bunch of words and they aren’t praying with their hearts. She also says that Jesus never intended for people to just be caught up in a bunch of rituals. There isn’t just one way to do things.

She’s just confused. Catholics DON’T pray the same thing every week. We pray the whole week long. Those little moments in which we recite a memorized prayer are the moments in our anthem when we return to the refrain.

Every beautiful piece of music has some repetition to it.

Why did God create the world so that the Sun comes up in the east every single day! How drab! Why did God create the world where everything dies in winter, then sprouts new to life in the spring, every year? THEN why did God send His Son to die and rise to new life - Didn’t he already say that prayer?

The 1-2-3 beat that is found in every waltz sets the beat to which we dance. So it is with Catholic prayer. We dance to the beat of Jesus’ passion, death, and resurection. And it is so beautiful!

I suggest that you let the Holy Spirit do the work; have as many Masses said for her as you can, and you can also offer up Communion for her. Great graces can be derived when a Mass is said for a living person; also, ask our Blessed Mother Mary to intercede for the conversion of your sister. Remember to place your trust in God- as Fr. Corapi says, the greater the trust, the greater the mercy God gives.
 
When you listen to the Eucharistic Prayers and realize that there has been very little change for the past 1700 years, you can’t help but be amazed.

Think about it, just as the choirs in heaven are constantly singing “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almight”, at this very instant, somewhere a Catholic choir is joining them in song or in prayer.

something that help me understand the mass is a book by scott hahn call the lamb supper. at least it explain to me a lot that as a cradle catholic didn’t know.also in the book he talks about revelation too. is a small book an easy to read.hope this help too.👍 May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be Adored, Glorified, Loved & Preserved throughout the world, now & forever.
