Why do you have to pay to get married in a Catholic Church?

When did the Catholic Church start DEMANDING PAYMENT from the wedding couple so that they can be married in the Catholic Church, sacramentally? I am not talking about a donation given; I am talking about the priest demanding payment before marrying a couple.

When I married in the Church, no such deman was made of us. When did this start? gh
