Why do you oppose stem cell research?

Stem Cells from Cord Blood are not Stem Cells from Adult Cells, but they are not Embryonic Stem Cells. Many Catholics do not understand that there are many types of stem cells. Stem Cells from Cord Blood come from the Umbilical Cord after the Baby is born. However, many Catholics are opposed to Stem Cells from Cord Blood and do not understand that they are not Embryonic Stem Cells.
I think that, on the whole, more Catholics are better informed on the subject than you give them credit.
Catholics who said this gave me the idea that many Catholics were against this.

Also, I did not believe that the entire Catholic Church was opposed to Stem Cells from Cord Blood, nor did I imply it.

I did get this impression from your title and OP. I took you to mean all Catholics when you wrote: “It makes no logical sense for catholics to be openly opposed to all stem cell research.” Just FYI, it wasn’t really clear that you weren’t talking about Catholics as a whole. 🙂

I was referring to the Catholics whom I had heard state that they were opposed to all Stem Cells.
Thanks for clarifying.
Ok, then what do we do with all these other embryos? We have hundreds of millions of them in the United States alone.
That’s just the point - we shouldn’t have frozen embryos! Now that we do, unfortunately, they should be implanted into their mothers and given a chance to experience the gift of life which God has given to them and which we have no right to take. Then we need to stop creating frozen embryos… in a perfect world.
Yes, exactly. How to deal morally with those embryos is a different matter entirely than whether or not to allow the (necessary) death of an embryo for research purposes.

On one hand, some would say that these frozen embryos are going to die a natural death eventually anyway, so why not use them for research. Theologically, however, that arguement is as nonsensical as saying it’s OK to do medical research on anyone at any age without their consent, as they are going to eventually die anyway. Right?

On the other hand, we have the technology to “rescue” these frozen embryos. However, doing so conflicts with Catholic moral teaching on IVF and embryo implantation…sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place…allowing these embryos to die when we could rescue them vs. playing God and taking the human-ness out of human reproduction.

Although the Church has not spoken authoritatively on what to do with these embryos, what has come out so far leans in the direction of opposing frozen embryo adoption.

Personally, IMHO (which is not authorative by any means), it seems to me that frozen embryo adoption could be a morally acceptable option under certain circumstances. However, I fully understand the hazard of reducing the discussion to “choosing the lesser of two evils”.

embryonic stem cell research has not come up with any cures, nor treatments – in fact, things go the wrong way creating cancer. No companies are investing in embryonic stem cell research because they know it does not work.

embryonic stem cells are harvested from? lowering the value of them.

Adult stem cell research is stable and has produced many cures and treatments.
