Why do you, or don't you recieve Christ's blood at Holy Communion?

Growing up the only time I did was at my 1st communion. My parents are kind of germ paranoid and the idea of us all drinking out of the same cup just grosses my mom out. As an adult since I was in the habit of just recieving the host I continued. At our new parish the priests have a small cup attatched to the communion plate and they dip it in the precious blood before placing it on our tongue (ofcourse not if someone choses to recieve in the hand) so now I do and I’m glad that I do, but I know Jesus is fully present in both.

Annunciata:
I receive the Precious Blood because it is offered in my parish and I wouldn’t walk past it. And, as another poster said: Annunciata:)
Jesus shed His BLOOD for me, HE asked me to eat His Body and to Drink His Blood. I cannot imagine, if it is offered, passing by that Precious Blood. HE would never pass me by.

I do or don’t do all of the choices, depending on my inclinations of the moment. I sometimes am repelled by the thought of all the germs, but I sometimes drink BECAUSE of that thought! And sometimes I am repelled at the idea of the germs so I do not drink.

I sometimes drink because I relish the wine making the bread more like real liquid flesh which so easily reminds me of Christ’s humanity…The bread does wash down more easily with the wine, but is that a good thing? Jesus asked us to do what was difficult.

Sometimes I deny myself the little high which the wine will bring. Sometimes I take the wine to bring about that high.

The bread is complete. Why the Church introduced wine I don’t know. I am a bit schizophrenic about it all, as you may have guessed, and so my thanksgiving is complicated as a result.

Also, since there are so few priests and so many extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, why does the Church continue to offfer wine anyway?

I receive the precious blood because Jesus instituted both his body and blood to be received by us. He did not tell us only to receive his body. Although I also believe that he is complete ly present under one species.

Doesn’t appear there are many of us whose parishes do not distribute the Precious Blood. We receive under both species once a year, but our pastor is afraid of spillage.

We don’t feel cheated, though. 🙂

I don’t because I don’t really need to and I am reasonably sure that if I receive from the cup, then other parishioners will refuse to do so.

If it helps you to understand that statement, I cough often. I am known for coughing. No, I am NOT sick (contagious), but nobody seems to get that. Some people clearly refuse to shake my hand (I assume because I am “sick”). So for that reason and a few others, I just stay away.

I miss it. I used to go for both.
That is sad—couldn’t you position yourself at the end of the line? Your reason is very kind and considerate. While you may not receive the Precious Blood, I’m sure Jesus is really smiling at you.

I do receive the Precious Blood for most of the reasons listed above—Probably the main reason is How could I pass it by? I agree we must have as much reverence for the Precious Blood as we do for the Sacred Body.

i am one of those wierd-o’s… i recieve under both because i cannot imagine passing up the opportunity to partake in the last supper one more time… can you imagine standing before Christ and trying to come up with a good or valid reason not too…

i don’t know… like i said, i guess i’m just wierd…

Peace 👍

Usually, if I’m feeling healthy I do because of the “sign value.” When I have the sniffles I don’t because I don’t want to get anyone else sick.

Well, He told His **apostles ** at the last supper to do so, so it can’t necessarily be taken as an absolute command for all the faithful. I have read this in many books, I think “Radio Replies” was definitely one of them.

I don’t do it because it’s not necessary and it’s one more chance for an accidental dropping of our Lord! I’m fine with people that do do it but I know I’m getting the whole thing in the Host!

I used to take it before I had cancer. Since my immune system is still affected I do not now because of the germ factor-I too miss it.

The Priest has consecrated both elements and both are Jesus, therefore I receive both.
That pretty much sums it up for me. I find it also helps me “visualize” (don’t know if that’s the right word, but it comes close…) the Last Supper which I like to do as I return to my pew/seat.

This said, my actual parish doesn’t offer His Precious Blood (except by intinction at Easter), so on Sundays I receive Christ under the species of bread solely; but the chapel on campus does offer it for weekday mass, so I receive under both species on the days that I go there.

I have a question, though… How much of the “wine” do most people take? I’m always afraid of taking too much and being irreverent so I sip very very little… But lately I’ve been wondering if I don’t have it backwards. What do most people feel is appropriate?

I bow to the precious Blood as I pass.

I dearly wish that I could receive, but I’m an alcoholic and I dare not.

I don’t take the Holy Blood, as I am a ‘Catholic returning Home’ and back when I was a teenager when I left the Church, wine was only given at very Special occasions, and this is one of the many changes that I have to come to terms with…like members of the Parish administering Holy Communion as well 🙂 .

as stated earlier… i would be hard pressed for a valid reason for not receiving under both specis… [disclaimer]… but i also have no issue with those that choose to do otherwise… it’s between them and God…

When we receive Communion under either species, we are receiving the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ.

When we receive Jesus under the appearance of bread, we are receiving both the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

When we receive Jesus under the appearance of wine, we are receiving both the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
This is because when we receive Communion under either species, we are receiving Jesus whole and complete. We are receiving His Body, His Blood, His Soul, and His Divinity.

I don’t primarily because I already do:
Chris Jacobsen:

One of the heresies of the Hussites was their denial of this Catholic doctrine. And no offense, but I also don’t think it’s very sanitary.

No sense in nit picking when the intent of the original post is obvious.

Would you have been more offended if she were to ask: “Why do you or don’ t you glug wine flavored Jesus at Holy snack time?”
