I have always wanted to ask people this, but it’s something that never comes up in conversation, so I’ll ask here. Why do you think Jesus gave us the Eucharist? In your own very words, why do you think he did?

He ascended yet he remained. He gave us himself to show us his great love. 👍

The Eucharist is part of God’s overall plan to sanctify humanity: the cornerstone of it, in fact.

The reason why God permitted evil and sin to enter into the world in the first place was to sanctify man. Man was created to be good, as were the angels. But angels are not capable of true love by virtue of the fact that they do not have free will. Angels have the freedom to make only one choice: whether they will serve God or not, and all of their future actions are determined by that choice. Man, on the other hand, is capable of making a tremendous number of choices over the course of a lifetime. Angels can choose good, but man can repeatedly choose good throughout the course of a lifetime and even make the choice to die out of love for another. Because of this ability to choose, found nowhere else in creation except in the sovereignty of God, man is able to become like God in Love.

God by His nature is Love. Love, as we know from having 1 Corinthians 13 read to us at many weddings, is patient, kind, and uncoercive. God, Who is Perfection, is Love; therefore one cannot be perfect without Love. But Love must be free or else it is not Love at all. One cannot be forced to love another.

Jesus reigns on Earth through the Eucharist for the same reason that He, despite being King of the Universe, chose to be born into a humble stable: He wants to be hidden away to be found by man, rather than forcing man to love Him–for that would not be loving. But there is more than that. Man, due to the consequences of sin, is not capable of truly loving another as God can love unless man first acquires the love of God. That Love can only be acquired through the Eucharist, because the Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, Who is Love and who expressed Love in the most perfect way possible by giving His life for our sins.

No Eucharist, no Love.

I totally agree with Allegra – a number of years ago I made a one-day retreat on the Eucharist, and the priest was so profound and moving I made a promise to myself that I would go to Mass every day so I could receivet Jesus in the Eucharist – believe me, Jesus is with me each and every day and I’m not sure I could get along without Him.

So that we could participate in His Sacrifice of the Cross to be united to him more and to understand how much He loves us and how much He suffered for us, and ultimately so that we could receive eternal life. 👍

Because He wants us to be united with Him 🙂 and this is the greatest way to be united with Jesus on earth, because He’s substantially present in the Eucharist.

…to help us on the journey. It is through the Eucharist that Christ meets us,becomes our companion and shows us the truth about love which is the essence of God. The Eucharist unites us with one another. We become the Body of Christ to the world.

Because He said, “I will not leave you as orphans” — and He didn’t. 😃

Before Jesus died on the cross, the Jews were required to make a sin offering yearly for the forgiveness of sins at the temple. Nothing the man could do could ever pay the debt man owed God for Adam and Eve’s sin. No matter how much meat they sacrificed to God, it couldn’t begin to repay that debt. Jesus’ death was necessary for man’s salvation because He was not only man but also divine. When Jesus died, that was the ultimate sin offering, and repaid that debt to God owed since Adam’s time. Once that debt was repaid, no more sin offering sacrifice was necessary on man’s behalf.

Jesus gave us the Eucharist instead to remember His sacrifice. It’s still an offering to God, but it’s one that is united with Jesus’ death on the cross, not a new one. It is prefigured by Melchizedek when he offered bread as a sacrifice to God for Abraham. To offer a animal based meat sacrifice would be confusing and similar to what the Jews did, and part of the old law that Jesus fulfilled. By offering bread, Jesus made sure the Eucharist would be a different sacrifice from the old Jewish sin offering. Yet by becoming His body, it’s still a sacrifice of the flesh, divine flesh and blood, united with Jesus’ death on the cross.

Bread was and still is an important food for people, especially in that area of the world. Bread and meat are necessities for life, and since it was a new offering different from the sin offering of the Jews, who already sacrificed meat/flesh, bread is the natural choice.

The Eucharist is to remember Jesus’ final sacrifice for us, but it’s not a new sacrifice. By becoming His flesh and blood, the bread unites with His sacrifice on the cross. We do it as a remembrance, to celebrate his sacrifice so we don’t forget, and as a sacrament as a means of obtaining graces necessary for a life of faith. Just as He gave us the other sacraments, to strengthen us and help us live a life of faith, and to do so through the church He established.

Similarly, wine is also an important food for people, especially in that part of the world. He chose that to unite with His sacrifice as a sign of his blood, as he chose bread for His body.

Because He said “I will never leave you or forsake you”. And this is how He keeps that promise.

No one jew can join themselves to the passover sacrifice unless they eat the flesh of the lamb as part of the rite. God ordained it that way. So too, unless WE eat the Body and Blood of our Lord, we CANNOT be joined to Him in the fulfillment of the old covenant on the rock of calgary, nor in the forging of the new covenant. Truly, unless we eat the Body and Blood of the Lord, we shall not have life within us.

So why did Jesus give us the Eucharist? Because God ordained it good from the very beginning of time, and this bears out in continuity from the old covenant to the new.
