Why do you watch or listen to Protestant televangelists?

I didn’t know that, only having watched him a few times a year. I won’t watch him again, you can bet on that.
 
In Australia we have the gigantic Hillsong Church, which rather sadly is the church with biggest single weekly congregation in this country. Of cause this is nothing compared to sheer numbers of Catholic parishes and Catholics in attendance, but it’s still somewhat significant.

Pastor Brian Houston is clearly an anti-catholic, and is pro “prosperity gospel”. Joyce Meyer will herself be talking there twice this month on her Australian visit.

However the Hillsong church undoubtedly crafts some of the most entertaining and energetic christian rock music in this country. I like the music, dislike the preacher.

Is Darlene Zschech part of Hillsong’s regular music program at Hillsong Church? I like her music, and I know she has some albums with Hillsong, but I don’t know if she’s always there.

She’s the lead Pastor of Hillsong Music Ministry, She’s always on the TV program frequently. Ever heard her preach? She doesn’t focus as much on the prosperity aspects of her own church so I would personally prefer listening to her than Brian or Bobbie. In fact one of her talks really did in fact help me with my own faith to understand how god enjoys worship and prayers to him. I disagree with the actual form of worship she personally prefers, but her message there was more about why we are supposed to worship and it was really touching.

I’ve never seen the TV program. I don’t have cable or a dish, and I don’t even know if the program is on in the States. I have heard her music on Christian radio, and although I don’t have any of her CD’s, I probably will get some of them because I like her music.

Thats good, but be careful not to be taken in by Hillsong prosperity messages. Instead use the music for your own worship purposes when it compliments your Catholicism.

I don’t plan on purchasing or listening to any of the preaching, so I wouldn’t hear the prosperity stuff. I am familiar with that sort of thing because I know who Joyce Meyer is, and I don’t like that message she gives AT ALL. “Health and wealth” is NOT the Gospel; Jesus says we need to take up our cross and follow Him. He never promises prosperity, but He does say that we may be persecuted because those who hate Him will hate us. The only Hillsong CD’s that I would be interested in would be music only, not preaching (if they have any that are just music). If all of their CD’s have preaching too, then I won’t be buying any!

None of the above.

I have a Protestant brother and sister so I watch to see what draws them. I want to try to get into their heads.

I think both my siblings are into that prosperity junk; but my sister more so than my brother. She is down right now as far as finances so she thinks that God owes her or something. She knows nothing about picking up her cross and offering up her sufferings to Jesus. Please pray for both of them. :gopray:

I think my sister watches her for her prosperity message. 😦 She thinks God owes her and wants her due. No cross, no pain, no struggles… that’s what she doesn’t want but that’s all she’s had so I think she’s mad at God.

With all these prosperity messages on TV, she’s doomed or so she thinks. That is why I can’t stand them. They brain wash all these people into thinking that if they’re struggling right now, that they don’t deserve it and should have better.
What ever happened to picking up your cross? What ever happened to following Jesus with your cross? These televangelist make me http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i85/Alegre-Fe/Emoticons/ew.gif.

The Catholic Church teaches the same thing. But you’re right, the Church does not stop there. The Church teaches that the husband should love his wife like Jesus loves the Church. :yup: You’re absolutely right.

I don’t mind listening in occasionally to protestant “preachers” as sometimes their messages are useful to me. However I agree with this above posting, Most followers of these people are Young and naive, and don’t just want the straight forward(catholic) message of the bible, but they want they want a message of the bible which suits them and makes them “the victim” and not the transgressor/Sinner. Like the Preachers, these people want to hear that the Catholic message that “to follow Christ requires a lot of work and worship”, is wrong somehow and all you need to do is get Baptized and that’s all… you’re saved.

That’s right, that’s all they need, or so they think.

As I flip channels on TV, I sometimes like what I hear. I take what is good and throw out what is bad.

There is this dark haired guy that I saw a while ago. I can’t remember his name but I think his first name is Greg. He’s tall, dark hair and fairly good looking. I liked some of what he said. Does anyone happen to know who this person is? I’m trying to search for him. I only saw him a couple of times late at night so I don’t know if he is anti-Catholic or not. From the little bit that I saw he didn’t seem to be.

I will add this to this discussion: I will say that I am not a Catholic, but I will say that people such as Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, and Benny Hinn make Christianity unpalatable to me. They make some extraordinary promises, and it does not offer one to experience a supernatural presence (in contrast to the Eucharist). Their version of Christianity relegates God to a “rich uncle” who merely gives his children what they desire and does not actively engage in a loving relationship with them.

Many Protestants have a problem with those so-called prosperity Gospel preachers also. The Bible says that we need to take up our cross to follow Jesus. Jesus does not promise “health and wealth” to His followers. He does say that we will be persecuted, just as He was persecuted. “Prosperity Gospel” is contrary to the Bible, and Catholics and Protestants agree on this.

You are indeed correct that Protestantism does not universally accept the so-called prosperity Gospel, but one has to acknowledge that is a vogue manifestation of Christianity.

Christians are not called to be fashionable according to the world’s standards, though. As Jesus says in John 17:14-16, " I have given them thy word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I do not pray that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but that thou shouldst keep them from the evil one.
They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world."

Honestly? I love to laugh at them… I hope that doesn’t make me a bad person. I also mock them sometimes. One favorite I have is “Jack van Impe Presents.” Essentially, it’s this guy and his wife talking about news for 15 minutes, then they start “prophesizing” what will happen, and how we totally need Jack’s “prophecy Bible,” into which he put over 11 years of work in to! All at the low cost of $60. And you get his wife’s book as a “special promotion, friends.”

Him, and then Christian Bible Network is always great, because sometimes you’ll get the message that says:
“I had cancer, my leg and arm fell off, and I lost an eye. I watched CBN once, and sent in $500. Now i’m an all-star Olympic runner.”

Or, my favorite story is one I heard from my Dad (who is Catholic) that heard this from a guy.
Apparently, his co-worker’s wife was walking in front of the TV, and some Christian show was on. She then fell to her knees, and she saw it as a sign from the Lord Jesus Christ. Then they went and joined one of those nifty big churches, with like 2 stories, and an auditorium hall.
Needless to say, my Dad laughed at him, and the other guy got angry and walked away. But, who can blame my father? That story is ridonculous (totally ridiculous).

I’m 19, btw, and in college, so that may affect my purposes.

<Edit: After reading more posts, I also love to rip on the rich-dedicate yourself to Jesus types (i guess they preach the prosperity gospel, according to posters here (ty)). I always point out to my family and ask “do these guys look like they have your purposes in mind? Or, does this look like a man of Christ?” or my favorite “does this look like a priest or a sleazebag money-grubbing lawyer?” (the last one was in regards to Joel Osteen).>
