Why does a Bishop remove the hat during Mass?

Why does a Catholic Bishop remove the Mitre and Zucchetto during certain parts of the Mass? This was something I just recognized. I assume they remove these articles as a sign of respect?

The way I understand it, the mitre is a symbol of a bishop’s teaching office. He removes it during the readings to indicate that even he listens and learns from Holy Scripture. The zucchetto is removed during the Eucharistic Prayer because we still observe the Jewish custom that men remove their hats while praying.

I’ve always thought it was so odd that Bishops remove their hats but women refuse to cover their heads…

Teaching comes from the same place but we keep one part and ignore the other? Does. Not. Computer.

Actually it’s a religious requirement for Jewish men to keep their heads covered during prayer… to remind you that God is always above you, and that He is close.

The zucchetto can be worn by all clergy, although it’s not as common for priests to wear them anymore. Different colors are used depending on rank (e.g. a priest would wear a black one).

A monastic on this forum explained it pretty well the other day… He said that the reason for wearing the zucchetto is the same as it is for Jews, but that it is removed at the Preface to prepare for Christ’s presence on the altar. The head remains unconvered during the Eucharistic Prayer because the focus is on God immediately present before you on the altar, rather than above you. The zucchetto is not put back on the head until after Communion. The same rules also apply to the monastic cowl.
