Why does a Catholic Bishop remove the Mitre and Zucchetto during certain parts of the Mass? This was something I just recognized. I assume they remove these articles as a sign of respect?
Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered brings shame upon his head
Actually it’s a religious requirement for Jewish men to keep their heads covered during prayer… to remind you that God is always above you, and that He is close. The way I understand it, the mitre is a symbol of a bishop’s teaching office. He removes it during the readings to indicate that even he listens and learns from Holy Scripture. The zucchetto is removed during the Eucharistic Prayer because we still observe the Jewish custom that men remove their hats while praying.
