Why does Babylon represent evil?

I don’t deny that the Babylonian Empire was evil, but they were just as idolatrous as the Egyptians, Assyrians, Greeks and Romans were. So why has Babylon become the byword for “against God,” and not Assur or Athens or Thebes?

The Exile. Read the end of 2 Kings.

The Assyrians totally eliminated the Ten Northern Tribes, however. That seems like a much more grievous crime to me.
But it was the surviving tribes (people), based in Jerusalem/Judea, who wrote the final compilation of the Scriptures. So the loss of Jerusalem (the Temple) was presented as more significant.

I would say that it has more to do with the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and also the dream of Nebuchadnezzar in which Daniel interprets the head of gold being the nation of Babylon which will eventually give way to other nations until the reign of God comes. To revert back to Babylon would be working away from God.

Yes, exactly, as the later chapters of 2 Kings I noted earlier attest.

So why has Babylon become the byword for “against God,”
for Christians maybe because of negative references (6x) to Babylon in book of Revelation 🤷

Revelation 18:2
And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying,
Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen,
and is become the habitation of devils,
and the hold of every foul spirit,
and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

Revelation 16:19
And the great city was divided into three parts,
and the cities of the nations fell:
and great Babylon came in remembrance before God,
to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

Revelation 17:5
And upon her forehead was a name written,
MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT,
THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
