Why does being a Christian require me denying myself and putting God's will first?

Some problems are created by useless attachments. It takes time, but with a good guide and will, a certain level of perfection can be reached.
 
Yes, for many many reasons.
Just to say a few from my opinion.
  • our nature is a fallen one, so doing our own will will be fallen one too. We don’t know what is good for us, but God knows.
  • we are easily blinded by ourselves. We don’t realize when we are falling into the bottomless pit until sometimes it’s too late
  • it teaches us Humility which destroys our wall of pride and gives a Love way to enter our hearts.
  • it teaches us Trust to surrender because we are not in control and many times we realize that when we get sick or in deathbed.
  • it teaches us how to truly Love God and others by putting us at last place.
Just like God is infinite I am sure there are infinite reasons why do the Will of God instead our own

God is God and our joy is in his will. God reveals to the prophet, “I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have any strange gods before Me" and “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”
