But this is a largely self inflicted wound. Public schools have taken the cowardly position of leaving behavioral problem kids mainstreamed in regular classes which alters the culture of the classroom and drags the entire class performance down. If the administrations would have the guts to call a spade a spade and tell the parents of bratty kids that their kids must remain in the ‘behavioral’ program until/unless they shape up, then the regular classes would vastly increase in performance. But nobody is willing to do that, so the class bully holds everybody else back. Been there, seen it myself and nobody is going to tell me it isn’t real.
Those “bratty” kids that are keeping your precious kiddos down are deserving of compassion and respect. Warehouse them in the “stupid bratty” kid classes and you will tell them that are not worthy of respect or capable of success. If you are pro-life you have to be pro-life for the entire lifetime of the child.
The school voucher proponents do indeed want to siphon on the best students and parents and leave the public system with the troubled kids and those that are profoundly retarded and in need of help. It takes tens of thousands of dollars per pupil to educate these kids - there won’t be enough money left in the system for them. It would be a shame for the smart kids with engaged parents to get their voucher-based education on the backs of the least fortunate.
