My husband asked me tonight why the Christmas season goes until the feast of the Baptism of the Lord instead of just until Epiphany. Help! It started as a discussion about taking down decorations early. Thanks!

During the Christmas season, we celebrate the three manifestations of Christ into this world: To Israel, at his birth; to the Gentiles, at the arrival of the Magi; and to the world, at the beginning of his public ministry, which was at his baptism. That is why the Church extends the Christmas season to include Christ’s baptism. Home Christmas decorations are a private family matter. It is lovely to leave them up for the entire Christmas season, but they may be taken down early at the discretion of the individual family.
