I have had discussions with some people who claim that doctrine is really not that important.

What is the best response to this statement?

Why does the law of gravity matter? Because it is a scientific definition of a truth present in God’s natural creation. In an analogous sense, doctrine matters because it defines a matter of supernatural truth. And, just as science builds upon known truths to make future discoveries, so the development of revelation builds upon known doctrines to further understand supernatural truth.
