Why does Everyone think they deserve an Escalade

Escalade is Cadillac’s giant SUV which is a status symbol for Materialistic and Shallow people.
Proclaiming someone else “Materialistic and Shallow” (upper case, no less) is just a tad presumptuous. I’m sure many people in the world could easily say the same about you and, in a relative sense, be correct using your approach.

Yup, we have them in Canada…everyone i talk to likes the idea, but so many would not touch them. The danger in the side is just way to much if someone hits you. They are not allowed on the highway for this reason (freeway). They are called electric cars. So basically, plug and go…good idea, but uless so many others would consider this, they will be litterally rolled over. BTW, i downsized from a mini van to a PT Cruiser. It works for our family of 4.

The car in the picture, that looks like a smart car, which is made by mercedes and has a diesel engine…it is not electric.

Tecnicality, when you are a bug on a windshield…and that’s what you’d be if hit on the highway. I have never seen one on the highway, and was told by a car dealership they were not allowed on the highway, but can be on roads up to 80 Km/hr (50 is in the city, 100 is the highway, but a country road can be 80)

My point was it’s size, and it’s nicknames…Puddle Jumper works too!

Ouch Mr…it was clear to me seeing this poster many times before, he is quite sure of every word he types. Topics in upper case yes, towards anyone in particular, no. But commenting on a wide range of people and their choices.

Agree or not agree, but ya done picked on a poster here, a good one at that! He was not speaking persoally to YOU…🤷

:highprayer: lets keep this to the point, and not personal…amen!

Why? Monkey see, monkey do.

In the wealthy suburbs near where I work, Escalades are everywhere. Gas prices? Pfft! “Buddy, I make waaay too much money to worry about gas prices. Heck, I gotta house by da lake!”

In these suburbs I’m referring to, there are signs for Condos that read: “Starting in the 250s or 300s.” Where, I ask, where do these people work? And most of the Escalades I saw had one or two people in them. And then there are trucks with tires that dwarf my car. How much does one of these tires cost? Oh yeah, and the homes, a million, million and a half for the average size version, the big ones are well, a lot more.

Too many people think, “I gotta live like a king!” I gotta have status! I want people to know I’m successful! I want people who watch me drive by to drool over what I got and they don’t! Yeah! I’m on top a da world!!

Plus, instead of lighting their cigars with $50 dollar bills, they can just keep em in the glove box to pay for gas. We all gotta make sacrifices in these hard economic times ya know

God bless,
Ed

All I’m saying is that “Materialistic and Shallow” is in the eye of the beholder. Who said he was speaking personally to me? Painting with a broad brush is rarely helpful. There are many good posters here who are"quite sure of every word they type." This doesn’t automatically give them a transcendent vantage point. 🤷

It’s because they don’t make cars with bench seats anymore. At one point in time it was possible to have a family sedan with bench seats that seated six people. Ask a dealer if he’s got anything with bench seats in front and you’ll get a blank stare.
You think this is funny…i did just that, and i DID get those stares! Most often they backed out of the conversation with, “What price range were you looking in?” Obviously the bench is reserved now for luxury ends of the price range.

I needed a full bench due to my size. With a van, i was ok. But as soon as i tried to downsize into a 4 cylinder, i was lost in the seating area. Almost all 4’s have a console in between the seats. This does not allow for the “extra” i own to be able to hang over said seat. I even tried a lot of the 6-8 cylinders…even the ford explorer truck…the truck had LESS room to sit in compared to the PT Cruiser.

It was the information i learned about them…from 2001 (mine) untill the 2004, there were no consoles placed in between the seats. So from 2005 and up, it was not possible for me to purchase. We got a 2001 for 6 grand…seats five, seats fold for cargo as well. I reduced my gas consumption big time…by about 40 percent compared to the mini van.

That’s such an old argument against small cars. They’ve been spouting the bug on the windshield thing even with the vw bug back in the 60’s. Actually none of this is new same ole same ole. I’ve seen the Smart Car on the highway in Europe anyway. The one I saw in San Diego was parked. (by the way Smart Car is the name of the car) SLOW down it saves gas and it’s safer. 😉

Now there ya go, ya lost me with those big words just when i was hopeing to come back with a good one…never mind…

I don’t think too much gets by you. We’re probably on the same page. 🙂

An old and highly valid argument, yes. Have you been in a collision in a small car? Would you like to hear about the time a small car turned our minivan on its side, just by running a red light at a moderate rate of speed? Do you have any idea what that would have done to us in a compact car?

There is a reason we have crash safety ratings in the US. You’ll notice all the vehicles getting high marks … they’re all BIGGER.

And the fact that you saw a Smart Car on the highway does not make it a safe vehicle. Motorcycles ride the highway all the time. Mazda Miatas do, too. Here in Texas we call them “deathtraps.”

:hmmm: Yer a tricky feller…I’m gonna pretend i knew the difference there. Between your comment, and your signature line, i am not sure if it was an insult or not. If it was, pride is now dirt deep…don’t tell me…ok!

And what do you drive Mr Priori-ty…You seem more of a multi tasker, Hybrid perhaps!

(taps hands on chin hopeing the conversation was diverted from the english escapade it was becomming)

:tiphat:

No more big words…:tsktsk:

:bowdown2: um, how does one find the back door!

I’d be first concerned at the rate of decapitation. All trucks are a certain height, and the smart car ain’t smart enough to drive underneath it safely. Somewhere at head, or EYE level, it’s gonna smart!

At least it only seats two victums…this has air bags, so under 12 are not allowed behind an air bag…so this is the new bacholor mobile or bacholorette mobile?

Like i said before, it is not that the car is not a good one, and that we are not trashing it’s workability. But…it can not hold children at all, and seats two, and can easily be made into an acordian. The big trucks and so on are not going to leave.

If safety is an issue, this car is not on the list…

A mom forever…

Now I’m confused. It was definitely NOT an insult. I sincerely apologize if it came off that way. 🙂 It’s not what I meant. I drive an Altima but it’s tight. I need something bigger actually.

ROFL…don’t allow my confusion to be catching…i was just having fun!

Altima…closes window to google altima…

Back…trying a, know what he was talking about, look on my face…

Way too crowded for me…a waste of space utilization, but it would be good for a smaller family i suppose…

seen the hybrid too…it was lookin pricy.

I’d never own one for financial reasons. I’m gonna get a home before one on wheels…man they are pricy!

PT Cruiser

When i test drove the truck, i actually could not drive it…i could NOT close the cab door. The console was huge between the seating. So the size of the car does not dictate the space inside.

The PT Cruiser had absolutely a huge amount of leg room and size compensations for me. I am overweight, have bad knees, and ankles, and this is why we had a vav to begin with. This car did all i needed. Just do not ask me to get in the back seat!! Kids are 9 and 10, so this works out fine for us.

Well, I drive a 2002 Ford Focus ZX3 (the little 2-door hatchback, seats four comfortably and has belts for five if necessary). My cousin’s wife was in a head-on collision in the same model of car and walked away from the totaled car with bruising and no major injuries. Good crumple zones in that car. I have no qualms about taking it on my 60 mile round-trip daily freeway commute, and the 30+ average mpg is quite nice too. Not all small cars fare badly safety-wise. As for rollovers, the higher the center of gravity, the more likely you are to roll over in an accident. That’s why SUVs have a disproportionately high incidence of rollovers (at least they used to, perhaps the auto makers have improved things). It’s entirely possible that the accident that flipped your minivan would have hit and spun a compact car but not flipped it over. 🤷

Now a Smart Car- I think I’ll pass. Those things have no crumple zones. If you’re in an accident, YOU are the crumple zone.

Again. Please move the discussion about cars down to City Cars - Would you drive one?

I want to get this back onto the question:

**Is today’s materialistic society finally catching up with some?
**
If not, I will have this thread closed.
