Why do you think we are left vulnerable to such evil ,who can harm us for all eternity?

Free Will.

God loves us and wants us to love Him in return. If we are not free not to love Him, then we can never be able to love Him. If we cannot choose the devil, then we are not choosing God, rather we are forced to God because we have no choice. Therefore its not true love, we were just made that way. We become drones, not humans.

Would you have ever trusted your husband’s true love for you if someone had been standing behind him at the altar with a shotgun? Or would you trust his true love for you if he had been standing there by his own free will?
Would you have ever trusted your husband’s true love for you if the only time he was there was when the times were good,? Or would you be able to trust his true love for you if times are horrible, and he stays at your side?

God gave us our free will, what we choose to do with it is up to us. He gives us our freedom. If we come back to Him, it’s because we freely love Him and choose to.

one word: SANCTIFICATION

You can’t be sanctified without trials. Jesus said we should be perfect as He is perfect. Tall order.

it seems like we can already choose ourselves and what we want over God, but when Satan comes along we choose things, feeling things, thinking things that we don’t even want. it doesn’t seem like a test of free will at all, but like we are losing our own wills because we are being attacked and undermined by Satan. I hate it.

No, we never lose our free will. Never think we ever lose our power to choose good over evil. Even at times when it doesn’t seem that way, we always have a choice. We by nature are attracted to things that are physical. Money, pleasure of sex, power, things of this world. All Satan can do is tempt us, but not control us. What we can do is make a smart and informed choice every step of the way. The second we believe that we do not have any choice is the second we give up that choice. No one can take free will away from us. We can only give it away, and that is what we should strive not to do.

If we trace free will back to the source, we find that God didn’t actually do it to us…because of free will, we kind of did it to ourselves (made ourselves more vulnerable by falling) - with a lot of help from satan.

In God’s original plan, we had our innocence , but we fell, because of pride, and that’s when things started hitting the fan.

Of course, being God, He had a “Plan B” , and, being God, His “Plan B” , just couldn’t help but supercede His “Plan A”, because He got to pour out more of His Mercy.

Although it remains somewhat shrouded in mystery in our earthly lives, in a very real way satan was instrumental in causing our fallen nature and wants and works for us to never make it to Heaven. With a mere thought from God, satan and his legions would cease to exist. But it is much more humiliating for him if we humans defeat him with God’s help.

God actually stacks the deck in our favor, if we ask Him for help. We have a lot of spiritual weapns at our disposal. The Rosary in particular is an awesome weapon against evil and to protect families. Our Blessed Mother is an extremely powerful ally ; and with prayer and fasting satan is bound.

Today is St. Monica’s feast. She prayed and wept and fasted for her son Augustine for roughly 10 years; and look at the results !

God’s desire is for us to be elevated even higher than we were before the fall.

I would imagine that the one thing worse than God simply wiping out satan without our participation would be if we wiped out satan without God’s participation … Given that we fell because of pride … Humility might have ended up being a very rare thing to come by if that had been the case.

If there was no alternative to choose from, then free will would be irrelevant.

In order to have a meaningful choice to do good, we must be given the chance to do evil.

Do you lock your children in their rooms 24 hours a day? Forbid them to go to school, or to friends’ houses, or go along with them and watch over their shoulder every minute that they are outside the house? Listen in on all their phone calls and look at every internet page they see and every email they send?

Fact is, your children doubtless have opportunity to ‘be vulnerable’ to, and connect with, plenty of people when you’re not around, despite your best efforts.

In any event, they’ll grow up soon enough and leave home, and thus be outside your control - and then they’ll be vulnerable too.

Truth is, you can only hope to have raised them with a good example and good moral guidance so that they know how to deal with temptation. You can’t hope to protect them from all, or nearly all, the bad influences they will encounter in their lives.

Thank you for your answers:
To summarize:
We were given free will and guidelines to do well, it is up to us to choose. We cannot be protected for our bad decisions.
We need trials for sanctification.
I add,God’s ways are unknown to us,like why angels had free will, knowing beforehand some of them would fall and work against our sanctification.
But Christ is the lamp in the night that guides us if we let Him,to arrive safely.

Life lessons, perhaps? A challenge to see how strong you are in your faith?
Just my thought.

Me, I don’t believe in a Satan as such, a force for evil, perhaps, but…anyhow…i suppose if there WERE a Satan, that would be the reason God would do it…seems kinda cruel, though.
Kind of like me tossing my kid in the ghetto for a week to see if he’d fight the temptation to resist gangs, drugs, and such…

NONE of these answers comes close to answering the question.

After Satan’s rebellion God could have locked him & all his followers in Hell right then but He chose not to.

Adam & Eve were created with free will, just as the angels were but God threw a joker in the deck and let Satan tempt them – a disadvantage the angels did not have.

Even so, I’m sure Adam & Eve would have disobeyed God Satan or no Satan, bringing death and misery into the world. Given our fallen human nature from that point on we would undergo trials and experience evil at each other’s hands, giving us plenty of opportunity to choose or reject God thru our free will.
There would be plenty of natural temptation I guess you could call it even w/o supernatural temptation from Satan and his devils.

So it beats me why God would let Satan run around loose.

GOD also provides Grace in ample supply so as to avoid Sin. No man is tempted beyond their strength. The Devil isnt all powerful. We can avoid his temptations by relying on GOD. When we grow enough in our love for GOD - we come to know that GOD expects us to know love and serve him. So , therefore , there isnt any trial or temptation on Earth that we should allow, with all the grace Almighty GOD supplies us , anything to supplant our love for GOD.

Giving in to temptation is putting Sin before GOD. But even if that should befall any one of us - we have Confession and penance to make things right again.

If we fall - its our fault - not GOD’s

‘Without temptation, no one can be saved. . . Whoever has not experienced temptation cannot enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.’

St. Anthony of Egypt

‘Because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am to vomit thee out of my mouth.’

Apocalypse 3:16

Food for thought.

Perhaps,if there was no evil there would be no virtue. The latter being the ability to do good.
Goodness would be the only existing choice, therefore that adjective would be meaningless.Virtue would require no ability. We would all be good by default.😛
Life would be less challenging, perhaps boring.
On the other hand, isn’t heaven supposed to be a place where everything is good?
And it promises to be the most awesome place for the ones that reach there.
We are all striving to arrive “home”,to the Lord’s heaven.
