Why does God endorse slavery?

Hi,

I can’t get round this question. Why would an all loving God endorse slavery as in exodus chapter 21, Luke chapter 7 etc. Everyone knows that slavery is evil. Taking away someone’s free will can never be right. God even condones beating slaves as long as they don’t die from the beating (exodus 21:20). Surely if God exists & loves everyone, then the advice to the Jews would be not to have slaves as its evil and wrong. Especially don’t beat them.

Please answer as this has shaken my faith.
