Yes, it’s hard to understand. God however tried to make us understand though.
He said He is like a Father. So, which Father does not love His children? And then He said, even if your fathers do not, He still loves us.
I think this is the closest that God tried to make us understand that He loves us.

It really is great that even though we are so horrid and stuff God still loves us for who we are and tries to call us back to him he truly is the Good Shepard

Yes we suck. Maybe He feels lonely with all those Angels so perfect and pure and the fallen ones too disappointing and impure and so the nasty evil human race (usually ungrateful too) is just the right spice in His eyes.

God’s nature is love.
Real love is “diffusive”; it must spill out beyond itself, increasing its presence as it were.
Real love seeks to serve, bringing goodness to others.
Our love needs to model/approximate God’s love for us, in an ever more perfecting way.
This is why the Church teaches about a “generously lived” marriage (no contraception, no abortion). Our love must diffuse, it must seek its highest state of perfection. It must seek to create, to diffuse, to spill outside of itself.
Contraception and abortion aren’t diffusive. They aren’t acts of love or trust or generosity. They’re inherently stingy and calculating.

What others have said, but one thing puzzles me - we are terrible? Read Genesis - God created man, and it was very good (Gen 1:26-31). Is God’s creation bad? I recognize we do bad things, but does that make us, at our core, terrible?
I relate to the parable of the prodigal son, particularly now that I am a father. My children could do all kinds of bad things, make bad choices, etc. I will still love them, despite what they do. That’s just a taste of the love God has for us.

Yeah God cares about his children with love that we don’t understand now but we will understand why someday.
