Why does God seem so harsh in the Old Testament?

I was reading “Can Atheists Be Good Without Belief in God?” over on the main site, and an atheist raised a point I’ve heard before but never really heard a good rebuttal to. (At least, if I have, I don’t remember it.)

re you saying that stoning your wife to death [if she wasn’t a virgin before marriage, specifically] was ok back then, but it is not ok now? Are you saying that it was ok for your god to endorse this contact back then as his way of “slowly” revealing himself?

Why is the Mosaic law so apparently harsh? I’m sure this question has been asked before, but I’m really bad at looking up stuff on the Internet.
