Why does Luke 1:36 use the word cousin?

The word ‘cousin’ appears in the gospel of St. Luke, Ch. 1, v. 36, Douay-Rheims. I was under the impression that this word was not in use in ancient Palestine; i.e., that the ‘cousin’ relationship did not have a distinct defining term among Jews.
