Why does not the catholic church boot prochoice politicans?

Note: under new rule, do not use names of politicans.

But, I think if the catholic church were really prolife, then the church would act like such and boot out catholic politicans who are prochoice.

What would be the purpose, in your mind, of “booting out” those politicians?

You think booting out is benefits the Church? I hardly think it is. If you go by this we should boot every Catholic for breaking the Ten Commandments.

I have read many statements from the Church mainly from the US Bishops, and some of the Vatican spokemen condemning Catholics who favor a Pro-Choice.

I like to add that under the Code of Canon Law, anyone who activity part take in Abortion itself in any shape or form are automatically excommunicated. See Code of Canon Law, #1398.

Being automatically excommunicated isn’t enough of a reprimand? If not, then certainly nothing else will be.
How you punish them’s up to you, but some seemed to be suggesting that you don’t do anything at all.

Harry Reid, the leader of the US Senate from Nevada is a Mormon but he routinely supports pro-abortion legislation. If I were his bishop, I would not give him a temple recommend.

then she should be consistent and publicly refuse communion, at each and every Mass, and initiate formal excommunication proceedings to every one, of any walk of life, politician or not, who is a “public sinner”–living in an invalid marriage or cohabiting, hiring illegal aliens, openly gay, indicted for tax fraud, anyone whose name appears on the PP donor list, the list is endless. If the policy is not going to be applied to all consistently it should not be applied at all, particularly not in a setting that reduces the Eucharist to a political statement.

here is my humble 2 cents worth. if the politicians or public are pro choice they should not be in the church unless they change their way of thinking. abortion does not have a place in the church. never has and never will. i don’t know how someone could support abortion and call themselves catholic because it goes against everything the church teaches.

With all due respect, puzzleA, I disagree that it is the same thing. The higher public profile a Catholic has, the more his ability to cause scandal.

If I, a private citizen who the public at large does not know (or care) that I’m Catholic, were publically pro-choice it wouldn’t be a blip on the radar because I have limited influence.

Even if I, as Joe Catholic, were to start an organization like NARAL or “Catholics For A Free Choice,” and were active locally, it would probably get a little more attention, but my profile and actual power would still be limited.

For the Catholic legislator or other influential public figure, however **–and especially for the one who makes a big deal about being a “faithful Catholic” **-- not only is this person of higher visibility and influence, adding exponentialy to their ability to give scandal – but they are empowered to propose and help pass pro-death and other anti-Christain legislation. It would be insane for a bishop or priest to give Holy Communion to such a one that persisited in such activity. To the man in the pew (and even to non-Catholics), that is outright complicity, if not sacrilige.

Surely though they need some form of repremand?
They do need some form of reprimand, and no one wants to be the one to do it.😦

Great job Bishops! Yeah! Makes me feel sooo good when I contribute to the diocese to see that absolutely no one wants to touch this.
The Bishops still have not made an official replacement for the no meat on Fridays outside of Lent and LEAVE IT UP to the guy in the pew to decide on it, which creates confusion, and some think they dont have any obligation because its not spelled out for them, and that they should be choosing something. How hard can it be to either properly explain this to the flock, or simply COME UP WITH SOMETHING already! What would it take? all of a couple hours in one meeting to decide on this? How about disciplining these pro-murder public members? Hey, they want to be PUBLIC about MURDER then why cant they(the Bishops) be **PUBLIC **about reprimand?
What the heck.🤷

Makes me want to be a Eastern Orthodox, Methodist some days, or episcopal.

Then I tell myself, hopefully they will eventually get off their DUFFS and do something. I will not hold my breath though.

Speculation:
  1. Because the Vatican doesn’t want to project itself as trying to influence or control politics in Western countries.
  2. Because the politicians don’t claim speak for the Church like a priest or theologian.
  3. Because politicians are are elected to vote based on what the people they represent want, not advancing their own agenda or the Church’s ideology.
  4. The Church is making an allowance that these politicians probably don’t understand enough about God to have full knowledge and therefore be in a state of mortal sin.
  5. The Church gets at least half, maybe more of it’s money from western countries (Europian countries and the US and Canada). They don’t want to be too heavy handed with regards to sin because it would damage the missions and relief efforts in third world countries, or they fear driving people out of the Church in the west.

That would mean kicking out all the capitalists  🙂 Including all those who manufacture weapons: designing the means to poison, irradiate, obliterate, tear apart, cripple, blind or kill one’s neighbour is not easy to interpret as “pro-life”.

The problems with calls for action of that kind, is that they are inconsistent - one’s own failures may be as great or greater in similar respects, or in different respects; but either way, one is preparing a rod for one’s own back.

And, those who clamor for the excommunication of others had better watch their backs, lest their own failings (or supposed failings) are used against them by those who think that they are not really Catholics. They can hardly expect long-suffering, compassion, or mercy from their own critics, if they refuse it to others.

Such appeals take for granted that we are not ourselves compromised in all sorts of ways - they foster the aloof & self-admiring pride of the Pharisee in the parable (Luke 18) - & that is a complete negation of salvation by grace, & of the guiltiness of all mankind which makes salvation by grace, alone, so utterly necessary if we are to be saved at all. Calls to kick out others imply that we are not as needy as they.

The measure we apply to others, will be the measure that is applied to us.

Thats all nice and fine, Gottle, but how many of us are directly or indirectly supporting Murder of innocent babies?
Yes, any Catholic publicly supporting murder of anyone is I am sorry to say not even in the same ball park of the typical sinner, sorry. I am not buying into the everyones sins are the same stuff. Its not true.
