this one has been knawing at me. Why is it the Catholic church that has to change it’s positions on Homosexual marriage, women ordination, abortion, birth control and priest’s marrying?
No other religious organization is under nearly this much pressure and attack from the secular world to change it’s positions.

Why not just be happy with the Episcopal church? They certainly look Catholic enough. They can claim Apostolic succession with a straight face (albeit they have to go through the Catholic church), and they have bowed to the popular culture on every issue. But no one cares. They want the real Catholic church to change

Of course they do. People who live in darkness hate the light.

But really, it’s all about feeling good. How can you feel good about your second marriage when the Church is telling you that you are disobeying God? Or how can you feel good about your abortion when the Church is telling you that you killed a baby? Why should people be told they are doing wrong? Where does the Church get off doing that to them?

(Er, where’s the sarcasm tags on here?)

But the married priest thing is in a different category. The Church wouldn’t violate any law of God to accept married priests. There are reasons to allow it, and reasons to disallow it. And the Church, the one who ordains the priests, can decide which way it wants to go on that issue.

One other thing you said, “No other religious organization is under nearly this much pressure and attack from the secular world to change it’s positions.”
While there are complaints about Islamic countries treatment of women and people of other religions, it does seem to me that the complaints are made to the governments of those countries, and not to the religious leaders. Part of this I think is because no other religion is quite so hierarchical and well defined as the Catholic Church. The other part is the same reason that animal rights activists throw paint on fur coats rather than go into biker bars and throw paint on leather jackets.

The reason why the catholic church is so picked on is because she is so big! The only church that is this large in the world. Because of that things that go on in the church are very noticeable in comparison to a pentecostal or a Baptist church. Because protestants are so split up its difficult to know what to pick on them for. With one large church like the catholic church modern views can easily try and rip the teachings to shreds just because they think the sacred traditions are a little too “archaic” Some people think that having women priests would solve so many problems in the church. I actually don’t see how. They say it will create more priests and stop the child abuse scandal. Even if the church did allow females to be preists all of my friends agree when I say priest is a male position. Whats wrong with thinking that? Not being a feminist doesn’t mean I’ve given into sexism. Also, women can be pedophiles just like men. If we have female priests we could have them touching more boys and now even girls. Things arr getting better but it just seems that people are too transfixed on the past that they can’t see it.

They want the Church to change because they don’t like it when someone tells them they’re wrong. They’ve rejected God and instead chose to focus on the personal wants and desires. Having rejected God, they want to see the constant reminder of His Truth, Beauty and Love destroyed. They want it gone for the same reason Satan wants it gone, Truth will always win, no matter how hard evil tries to conquer it.

I have a guess, and it’s only based on personal observation and could be very very wrong. And i say this as a catholic who has been in and out of the church’s good graces. Right now I expect that I am OUT, but I digress.

The Catholic church and to a lesser extent because they are smaller the eastern orthodox, is seen by the world, even the protestants as the Original church. there is no denying that every Christian denomination is an offshoot of the Catholic or Orthodox churches. In fact both the Catholic and Orthodox churches consider the other as an offshoot, but that’s for another thread.

And deep inside, whether you love them or hate them, whether you think they are 100% right or 100% in error, there is a special relevance given to the “original church.”

Periodically I have seen threads asking why when people of any denomination feel that they are possessed, they think about petitioning the Catholic Church for an exorcism. In my opinion it’s for the reasons I outlined above. So things that happen or don’t happen in the original church is important to all Christians.

I expect my post will get responses that say “I’m a (name your denomination) and you couldn’t be MORE wrong!”
My only response to that is 'you could be right. I don’t know. It’s just a feeling I have based on being a Catholic for a long time."

The reason why I am converting to the Catholic faith is for this reason alone. The doctrines of the faith has never changed for over what 2,000 years. So, therefore, it stands to reason that the policies of the Church should stick to the Doctrines for things such as priest ordination, etc… Although there had been examples of women, mostly in the Old Testament, who have been quiet leaders of their families such as Rebecca, Esther, the prophetess Deborah, and some others I can’t think of right now, who have had to lead the way for God’s righteous purposes. But I never found an actual case of a women priest in the Bible. So, there you have it.

But I do think that male priests should be married to prevent such crisis as the sex scandals and other issues from happening. In my opinion, God ordained marriage as a sacred institution from the beginning starting with Adam and Eve. If the Church won’t change that policy, then all they have to do if there is a child or a single woman in the room, have two priests there and maybe with a nun to prevent such things from happening. So, therefore, there are a few things they could do to make it a more efficient Church that way.

Your post made me think, –Imagine if the Pope should announce a great revelation and change(or reveal) his views and proclaim a new dogma, that included : Abortion is permitted after the third trimester, that same sex marriage is acceptable, that birth control is acceptable and that priests may marry and that women may become priests.

At least pending the mysterious death of the Pope and/or selection of a new Pope, how would I respond?

While such a sweeping change may be difficult to IMAGINE, does the same difficulty apply to married priests and/or female priests?

I think a lot of it also has to do with trying to make the Church fit within what society thinks is normal. Just look at tv shows nowadays. Morality has been thrown out the window in exchange for what feels good. I think confusedgirl also has a point about people who feel the Church’s teachings are archaic. I have been told my beliefs are medieval and such and that the Church’s teaching only applied to what was normal back then and can’t apply to today’s society.

Yes, because priests who molest children are normal, healthy people who are forced to violate children because they don’t have a wife to have sex with, and there are no other immoral sexual outlets to which they have access.

I agree. God made men that way to crave sex to propengate (where is the spellcheck?) the species so to speak. That is Mother Nature for you.

Its because the Catholic Church proclaims the truth on these points, and people hate the truth, especially the truth about their own behaviour (esp people such as abortionists and homosexuals).

You see, often the truth is challenging or difficult, or it doesnt suit us somehow etc.

Many people much prefer to make things up as they go along, as opposed to stick to the truth. This is more convenient for them.

Many people think it unfair that the truth isnt always cuddly, pleasant and nice. Many people lack the maturity and grace to deal with such a reality, hence the retreat into fantasy.

Some religions - eg islam and hinduism - are mostly adhered to by non-white people. In the liberal secular west, being non-white means “above criticism or question”.

They are also scared of the muslims.

The protestants have already bowed to secular society on every contentious issue going, and so are now just benign social clubs for vaguely well-meaning people.

Maybe they once looked Catholic. Now they look like a Hippie Commune playing at Catholics lol

Not anymore they cant. Women bishops ended that.

Thats right. It all comes back to people hating the truth. If you proclaim the truth, this causes a problem for these people. Their only goal is to suppress the truth.

Once people stop proclaiming truth, then they become nothing but an irrelevance and so they fall off the radar of critics. Thats why no one cares about the Episcopal Church etc - because it is irrelevant.

This is also why the Episcopal Church is rapidly dying. The fact that they are dying a death ought to inform them that they are on the wrong path - but it seems reason cannot penetrate their egos. They dont care if they die out in a decade or two - they got their Women Bishops and their Homosexual Bishops, and thats all they ever wanted or cared about. In my honest opinion, they have no real faith and are just secular people in bad vestments. (All of their opinions and values are 100% in line with secular values).

I realise its quite unpleasant to see the Catholic Church under constant attack in the media etc, but look at it this way: It means we are relevant. It means we unsettle and/or challenge people. It means we are seen as important. It means we have the truth.

Christ warned us, in his own lifetime, that it would be like this:
Matthew 13:13:
And you shall be hated by all men for my name’ s sake. But he that shall endure unto the end, he shall be saved

I remember when the conclave was going on the one that elected pope francis, how a lot of news organizations were talking if the church would change on stances in regards to abortion, gay marriages, women priest, priest being able to marry. I asked my priest about it and he told me. The church does not change to please the culture, we stand to defend the bible.

It’s ironic how all 44,999 (approximate) of Protestant denominations say they go by bible alone but change on topics just to please ppl.

The majority of child sex offenders are married men (most of the victims are their own children) and the majority of sex crimes took place in the victims’ own homes.

Therefore, the argument that priests should marry will only make the sex scandal worse.

I have always wondered the exact same thing. It seems like the press was hoping for a Pope that would change the church to bend to the whims of society. I remember a commentator saying, “The Catholic Church has a lot of growing up to do.”

What you confused about? Where the spellcheck is?? I am still trying to find it. 🤷

Because darkness hates light. And as long as the light shines there is not darkness.

I disagreed with your original statement, but then you said you agreed with me, so now I am confused.

No, you misunderstood me. I agree that the priests are healthy normal beings who are forced to have to do this.
