Why does the government care who loves who and for how long?

Why is the government in the marriage business at all?

I thought they were trying to protect the rights of the children to financial support from their biological parents so they don’t become a further burden to the state.

So what’s love got to do with it?

The government is “in the marriage business” because it is the institutional part of our society, and society has an interest in its future, which is made up of the children.

Thus the government encourages (or once long ago did) situations which work best for children: two adults who are of the nature to procreate (conceive and bear children), and who are committed to raising the children together.

And this the government grants (or once long ago did) certsin benefits to those who are doing the society the service of bearing and raising the future of the society.

It was only after the acceptance of marriage-eroding things like artificial birth control and no-fault divorce that marriage started being more about love and less about children.

Okay,

So children are no longer a part of the equation.

So why does the government even care, who loves who or who lives with who and for how long?

The Constitution and presumably the govt was established and ordained to promote the general welfare.

How does having people live together for whatever length of time promote the general welfare in a way that it deserves special benefits?

Isn’t that discriminatory to those who live alone?

Our government has been involved in marriage since its establishment. Our government now considers parents of the same gender to be a family and wants to encourage stability in the parenting unit. The concept of marriage has changed a lot in my lifetime. It has gone from a life time union to some sort of friendship pact.

Yes, but it’s not only “parents”. It seems to mean, but I’m not really sure because is isn’t well defined, that two people live together and perform some form of sexual act with each other.

Although I’m not sure if the sexual act is a required part of it…or even the living together for that matter???

And I’m not sure how this benefits society in a way so as to merit special benefits??

Civil marriage has become some sort of lover’s contract or something. I think it has moved beyond establishing a family.

Yes, exactly…or something.

I wonder, does the government know what it is?

The governments role is to serve and protect. SSM are civil l right, not a law, but tonight I heard someone on the news speak of an amendment to the constitution. If that occurs it is “Katy Bar the Door!” Your prayers are needed.

The bigger the government gets the more control on data it looks for. In cases of marriage, it looks at the census to project, tax, and determine costs of governing (domestic disputes, licensing, schools, prisons, roads, ect). As the government grows bigger it needs more and more data. Issues like immigration, marriage, and such become numbers for them. As healthcare grows from private to public, the government will use marriage. Classifications to project geriatric and actuary costs associated with medicine. A marriage license indicates less promescuity, therefore less STD’s and a longer life span.

all about popularity, wonning votes, controlling. We now have gay “marriage” in Ireland as it is the year before an election and the current govt is unpopular and trying to smarm up to folk. No morality etc.

I thought Ireland was a Catholic country. What happened since Vatican II?

Where have you been living! What has happened is decades of serious major child abuse, sexual and otherwise, by priests and religious. Condoned by state and gardai Nothing to do with Vatican ll. Trust has gone. Sure churches are still crowded at times but not like the days before the scandals were rightly outed. The Church has gone from owning and running very school, hospital, industrial school, orphanage, laundry to having little and waning influence. We are a n increasingly secular country and the Church has headed this change . Check also the organisations ACP and Church Ireland.

So what you are saying is that they went from worshiping God to worshiping the government?

A contract one side can dissolve unilaterally without showing cause and without penalty? Not much of a contract, from a legal standpoint. 🤷
