Why doesn't Michael Voris appear on EWTN?

I can see that there are people who have righteous and valid concerns about our Catholic faith and how things are being handled. Not everyone knows perfectly how to moderate their feelings when expressing their concerns. It sounds like Michael Voris may be one of these people.

Sometimes the manner of making criticism is “over the top”. I like to use a “filter” when listening to others, because I do not want to miss the heart of the concern they have. It always helps to pray first before reading or listening to others on various topics concerning our faith.

I would believe that it’s because Michael Voris is far too “traditionalist” leaning for EWTN.

That’s not to say that EWTN isn’t traditional in some ways, but it appears to be largely centered on things modern (i.e. not condemning Protestantism for the heresy that it is as vehemently as Voris does). If that makes any sense…

This is my opinion.

It might have something to do with his considering democracy an experiment doomed to fail and favoring a dictatorship instead. Or with his suggesting that the ordinary form of the Mass in the Latin Rite is a freemason plot to destroy the Church. I wish I were kidding.

Yes, I did just bring that up again. In every thread about Voris, Catholics should be reminded of the dangerous ideology that he holds to.

Then again, I remember the time EWTN had a guy on who explicitly endorsed torture, so maybe not.

Here’s another favorite Voris quote of mine:

“If you want to completely waste your time, try talking about faith with a committed Protestant.”

That’s not blunt or militant, it’s an offense against charity.

Are you of the opinion that Protestantism is not a heresy? If it is, is it more charitable to say it’s not? If it isn’t how would you suggest the Catholic Church position itself as one of many, and therefore no, true faiths?

I don’t think any official or quasi-official organ of the faith (and I call EWTN quasi-official in the sense that now that Mother Angelica is out of the picture, the network has a more amenable relationship with many bishops) has had the testicular fortitude to call the priestly abuse crisis what it was, quite simply, a homosexual ephebophilic crisis, not a pedophile crisis. Voris quite correctly and vociferously points out the real truth and PC world can’t or won’t handle it. If you listen to the very amicable interview Voris did with Bishop Bruskewitz you will find that not all Bishops are afraid to call a spade a spade, and not all Bishops feel that Voris is anything but admirable in his effort.

Is he stark and harsh, yep…absolutely. Is he wrong, not in the least.

TedDC,

To be fair, Fr. Corapi’s ‘fall’ was the result of a specific accusation of misconduct; if not for that he’d still be going pretty strong. At least that’s my understanding. I haven’t watched a lot of Fr. Corapi, so I don’t know if anything he says would seem as wrongheaded to me as what Voris says.

But yeah, it genuinely scares me that many Catholics see no difference between a passionate and uncompromising but charitable defense of Catholicism and what Voris says.
I look quite forward to seeing a few minutes of MV every day. The Vortex is actually a little shot in the arm for me. I realize that he is a human being, and as such he often interjects some opinion with the truth, and as well, he is prone to going overboard as well, due to his passion for the topics he speaks of. I guess it’s easy enough for me to tell when he’s being a little over the top that I can sift through it. Frankly I find those moments to be rare, and more the exception than the rule. He is a passionate lay evangelist perfect for this particular age in the church. he inspires many people I know, including relatives who are Lutheran. I know of protestants in my own family who are taking another look AT the Church. Not moving farther away from it, because of the episodes of the Votex I’ve forwarded in emails. MOSTLY, (not always), I find him charitable, where charity is due, and unflinchingly direct where need be…and from my vantage point, at this crucial turning point of post-modernism in the west, he stands as a solid dependable voice in the overwhelming relativistic winds of neo-liberal theology which have been eating at the Church from the inside out since the myriad misinterpretations, and therefore misguided implementations of the documents and declarations of Vatican II. He is fully on board with our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI who is the perfect Pope for these turbulent times as well. He’s mostly just encouraging the Bishops to start bringing things back towards orthodoxy. An inherent orthodoxy which the Church should not have veered from to begin with.

Having said all that, I understand, respect and appreciate that you don’t care for him, and I’m sure many would not. Some of what he says is painful, even to me, and I like him. I just wanted to take a moment to stand up for MV and his lay ministry, while at the same time acknowledging that he may be a little rough for EWTN, which is my favorite TV network. I’m perfectly happy to have Mr. Voris available in webcasts on the internet. EWTN must appeal in a subtler way to a wider variety of Catholics. EWTN already gets accused of an overly orthodox bias. They and MV are not a good match for a regular show, though I do think he’d make a great occasional guest on The World Over, or even “The Choices We Face”.

Blessings,

Steven

What a marvelous attitude, and (whether or not intended as such), great piece of advice.

Thank you,

Are you suggesting that “If you want to completely waste your time, try talking about faith with a committed Protestant" is not an uncharitable and anti-Ecumenical thing to say?

I would say that it isnot very attractive but I would also aver that it is quite correct in my experience. However, I would also say that protestantism is based on heretical teaching and is in fact a collective heresy in all its iterations. The fact that Voris says that is refreshing. Frankly, I’m not all sure what this “Ecumenical” thing is all about from the Vatican standpoint. I know from my experience at the parish level that the concept advanced by the women who run my parish is that one denomination, sub-denomination or non-denomination is as good as any other, and that too is a heresy.

By the way, you didn’t answer my question (answering a question with a question is an old radio talk show trick, it is also one well perfected by my 17 year old.)

JRRTFAN,

I never denied what Voris said about Protestantism; I only linked to that video to substantiate the quote I posted, so that I couldn’t be accused of making it up. If after your next post you still want me to comment on the position that Protestantism is a heresy, I will. But I don’t think it’s relevant to the criticism I’ve actually leveled, namely, that to say talking with a Protestant about faith is a waste of time is anti-Ecumenical.

The Church believes that Ecumenism is extremely important and not reducible to a heresy. Here’s the Decree on Ecumenism from Vatican II. The Church also believes that dialogue with our Protestant brothers and sisters is an important a fruitful activity. But Voris doesn’t agree. That’s problematic.

I used to despise Voris. His militant approach was too much for me initially. However, I have now listened to all of the podcasts available on his website. I am still not his biggest fan, but he does have some useful information hidden within all his ranting.

As a speaker he is not terribly effective. At least, in my opinion he’s not.

First, he tends to state opinions and facts that he actually isn’t very good at backing up. I’ve listened to him on his radio show and when people call in with objections he is absolutely lousy at defending his points. I’m sorry but quoting one line of Scripture and saying over and over again: You’re wrong, you’re wrong… yeah. That’s not good apologetics. I think this might be partly due to his disproportional passion.

Second, he is way too critical. I get tired of hearing him attacking this or that. I’d really like to hear him share MORE of what the CHURCH teaches and less about what everyone else is doing wrong.

A little passion for your faith is good but Mr. Voris needs to learn to calm himself a bit before he’ll really start being effective.

He kind of makes me think of a watered down Scott Hahn. He almost has the information but it’s like he doesn’t have a proper grasp on it. At least not a good enough grasp to properly explain it to others. He uses the right language but can’t expand it.

Anyway, I think that’s probably why he hasn’t been on EWTN. He’s all passion but not quite enough thought at this point. He reminds me of an angry bull just charging forward and knocking all the china down on his way.

PS: I also get sick of him picking on people. It’s subtle but he likes to poke fun at people all the time. I’m not a huge fan of that.

Um - Michael Voris doesn’t have a radio show. So not sure who that big ol’ rant is about.

Actually, he did have a radio show. 🙂 It was called “In Your Faith” and aired around 2007-2008.

DID - no longer does. That was three years ago.

Good to know that you no longer despise him.

Yes, and my point was on that radio show when people called in he was lousy at answering their objections to the faith. I have not heard him in active conversations outside of podcasts of that radio show.

I suppose I worded that incorrectly. I despise his style, I don’t know him personally. 🤷

I do know him, he’s one of my closest friends. And I assure you, he can hold his own with just about anyone when it comes to discussing the Faith. People can change a lot in three years you know.

🙂

I’d like to hear that and judge for myself. 🙂 In my experience personal relationships can cloud judgment. Tell him he needs more podcasts. 😉

The focus of the apostolate has shifted to a purely video format. Hundreds of hours of programming can be found on www.realcatholictv.com. The trend has moved away from audio only to video with the explosion of mobile devices and super fast internet connections available almost everywhere for viewing video.

Yeah, I’m not interested in video. I can’t watch video at work (I LIVE at work) but I CAN listen to podcasts. Guess it’s time to find a new apologist to listen to. 🙂

When/if realcatholictv offers podcast versions of their videos I might actually sign up.

People that have trouble with Michael Voris tend to be the Pollyannas that don’t think we should judge anything and want instead to be coddled.
