Why doesn't the church recognize its eastern saints?

I just realized that a few days ago was the feast of St. Nicholas. I remember back in my younger days attending a Byzantine Catholic Church, St. Nicholas was a big deal. He was involved in the creation of the Nicene Creed and in defending the church against Arianism.

Other saints like St. John Chrysostom, Basil the Great, or even the Desert Fathers who contributed great writings and insight are all but completely ignored in the Church despite the fact that they are canonized saints before the great schism.

In the RC Archdiocese of Chicago, we had at least 2 churches dedicated to St Nicholas, at least two to Sts Cyril and Methodius and another to St Basil.
Check out the Fundamentals Of Catholic Dogma by Ludwig Ott. The Latin Church relies heavily upon Eastern Fathers in formulating doctrines.

The simplest answer is that the Church does not ignore them.

And that saints most frequently are local/ethnically paid devotion to. It’s how the calendars are constructed. There are national saints.

And so… East is East and West is West… and you will find more devotion to each’s saints… locally.

That’s all.

I once went to an Irish parish where an Italian bishop presided. The church was built, an Irish priest installed, and the priest said, ‘We will name it St. Patrick’s’, and the bishop said, ‘We will name it Saint Jerome.’

Guess who won?

Well the bishop named it St. Jerome, because he could do that.

And the priest had a huge statue of St. Patrick put out in front, because he could do that.

I wouldn’t lay bets as to who was mentioned more in the sermons either.

Don’t confuse your own limited experience with what the Church actually does.

Where did you get the idea that these saints were ignored?

And by "Church’, are you limiting this word to the Latin Church, specifically the Roman rite?

These saints are on the Roman Calendar–along with St. Nicholas.

They might not be as popular as are Ss Frances and Therese, but that doesn’t mean the Church “all but ignores” them.
