Why don’t more priests practice laying on of hands for the sick. for example? And why are priests so afraid of preaching powerful homilies, recommending the Sacrament of Confession etc?

without conversions in the church you would have alot of people jest sitting there on Sunday and thinking ok I am here doing my obligation. they need to realize that without a conversion and drawing closer to God they are just pew potatoes.We need to be alive and moving in our churches today more than ever. Converted people are the ones who are putting God first and have a longing and desire to do for him, so are we needed in the church we sure are for without us the church would be in trouble. Praise God!!!

I don’t know…because if you don’t hear about the sacrament of reconciliation from our priest…then you are not listening. He talks about it A LOT!

I think most priests lay hands on the sick- in the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. 
I do wish there were better homilies and more encouragement to go to confession.
When it comes to specific preaching style though, there are cultural differences. I think if I went to a Catholic mass and the priest started preaching in the manner of an enthused Pentecostal or whatnot, I would be extremely turned off. Tone it down, man; let the light shine through in meekness and clarity. I don’t need the shouting and the odd inflections in your voice and asking for an “Amen.” But then again I’m a quiet guy and I come from a very tame United Methodist background followed by oridinary Catholicism in the Northeast. For those with a different personality or from a different culture or subculture, a different style of preaching might be entirely appropriate.

The charismatic movement is not of everyone. The Catholic church I grew up in was deeply immersed in the Charismatic movement. I am deeply grateful to it, as it taught me to pray for and to recognize the movement of the Holy Spirit in my life. However, as my spirituality has matured I have found the Charismatic atmosphere to be strained, forced, and unhelpful to my spirituality. It can become like a drug, you are “high” on the Spirit, but soon it is not enough, and you can’t get the “high” from the same activities. So I found it a relief to move into a quieter spirituality where a quiet reflection and meditation on the mysteries is the focus.
The Church I grew up in has since moved slightly away from the charismatic center and instituted authentic devotions of the rosary, chaplet of divine mercy and perpetual adoration and frequent confession times. The new(er) priest spends a lot of time ministering to the sick and praying for those who have died. (Old priest never went to the graveside to do the prayers there). And he works to make the Mass the ultimate liturgy of the Church, with correct, reverent liturgical practice.
So, the charismatic movement is not the best thing to happen to the church, it has been helpful to many (myself included), but it also led to liturgical abuses that drove people away from the church, or when people came down off their “high” they could no longer believe in God, because they couldn’t “feel” him anymore. I believe that it led to a shallowing of the faith, where people reduced God’s work in our lives to this thing that we could feel and abandoned traditional devotions and practices that could have sustained the faith in times of suffering or darkness.

Everybody claims papal endorsement for all sorts of things. But when you read what the popes have actually said about charismatism, a disturbing pattern emerges. There are constant reminders to stay obedient to the hierarchy, exhortations to study Catholic doctrine, and repeated warnings against superficiality, subjectivism, and illusion. Now why would the Holy Fathers harp on these themes over and over again unless the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement has already demonstrated those tendencies? Jilly4ski’s story about her parish confirms this, and I have a few disturbing stories of my own. Anyway that’s my take on it.

I was thinking the same thing. If it’s not part of the homily, our priest brings it up in the announcements.
As for the laying on of hands, we do that in a group setting once a month and whenever someone asks for or needs the Sacrament of Annointing of the Sick.

I am confused. Are you wanting to discuss priests using the gifts of the Church through the Sacraments or do you want to discuss the charismatic movement. We have lots of the former and very little of the latter. As to why? Who knows other than the Holy Spirit? Not all priests are called to that form of worship.

LOL. Same here. If you go to my Parish and listen to the homily you will most certainly hear about the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
