Not knowing what you and the priest discussed, I cannot comment on why he might have told you to remain Episcopalian, as your Profile indicates that you are. The only just reason I can think of to discourage a conversion is if there is reason to believe the potential convert is insincere or is unwilling to believe and practice all that the Catholic Church requires him to believe and practice. Even then, the response shouldn’t be to encourage someone to remain where he is, but should be to invite him to study the Church more closely and to pray for the graces to be able to convert.
If you were truly sincere about conversion, and prepared to believe and practice all that the Church would require of you, then at the time you might have added a touch of steel to an otherwise polite voice and demeanor, and said, “Surely you would not discourage me from converting, Father. I must not have heard you correctly. Now, what must I do to be received into the Church?” If that did not dissuade him, then I could only recommend writing a letter to the bishop, explaining what happened and asking for the name of a priest willing to instruct you in the faith and receive you into the Church. At this point, I recommend going to another Catholic parish and trying again with another priest.
