I’ve been looking through this forum and have seen many questions asked. However, the answers almost always come from the catechism and not Scripture. I’m just curious: why is this?
The Catechism is the teaching of the Church. As Catholics, we do not believe in Sola Scriptura. Sacred Scripture is the most cited reference in the Catechism, but the Catechism explains what the Church teaches, with Scripture and with tradition.I’ve been looking through this forum and have seen many questions asked. I think you need to look closer - there are extensive scriptural quotes here and Catholics often quote the Scriptures …I’ve been looking through this forum and have seen many questions asked. and which writings would not be included - those books became the New Testament …Cannon = an ecclesiastical rule or law enacted by a council or other competent authority ie those writings that embodied the faith of the followers of Christ
” Matthew 16I believe I frequently quote the bible as well as the Catechism, which if read attentively reveals its scriptural basis.
Jesus gave the first leader of His Church the promise:
you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[d] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Perhaps it depends on what threads you are looking at. Questions like “What does the Church teach on …” will generally get answers from the Catechism as it is generally more clear than Scripture. Likewise if there is a question on how to understand certain Scripture texts the Catechism can help there.I’ve been looking through this forum and have seen many questions asked. Actually many Catholics do quote scripture but it’s not our only source for teachings-the Catechism is the main source-because the Church is considered to be the authority. The idea that scripture can be used to conclusively prove any particular belief or teaching has been demonstrated to be patently false by the sheer number of conflicting interpretations of it.I’ve been looking through this forum and have seen many questions asked. How very true. The one verse I hear over and over again from Protestants is “You shall know them by their fruits…” (Matthew 7:16, KJV), which is used to brush you off when you disagree with them. One thing is that some view the Scriptures as sacred and not just a theological textbook or a manual. So many differing personal interpretations and the myriad of preconceived notions often denigrates Sacred Scripture into a battle of “dueling Bible verses”. :bible1::slapfight::bible1:
The Catholic Mass is almost completely based on scripture.I’ve been looking through this forum and have seen many questions asked. However, the answers almost always come from the catechism and not Scripture. I’m just curious: why is this?
What is even better than knowing what it means, is to be able to listen to God speaking to us through his word. How very true. Better to know what Sacred Scripture really mean following the Catholic Catechism then to be able to quote half of Sacred Scripture out of context and with little knowlege of it’s real meaning.

Quoting scripture has its place and time. What I have noticed many Protestants quote scripture, but misinterpret the specific verse. It is sort like asking:I’ve been looking through this forum and have seen many questions asked. However, the answers almost always come from the catechism and not Scripture. I agree that everyone should read Scripture. As Saint Jerome said, “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.” However, we must must remember that Scripture by itself is not the final authority. The First Book of Timothy 3:15 says “…the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.” The Catholic Church is the authority. When we read Scripture it must be with the guildance of the teachings of the Holy Catholic Church, which is presented to us in the Caechism. Reading Scripture without the guildance of the Catholic Church is at the heart of why there are 40,000+ Protestant denominations.Sure the Catechism explains things to us, and commentaries are great, but God want’s more. Your Father has things he wants to tell you. You just have to be patient, and read a little every day, and the Holy Spirit will teach you how to listen with your heart.
