Why don't Priests stress sin,sacrifice,&judgement?

I am a cradle Catholic born in 1969 and throughout my entire life I have listened to priests give good homilies and they make me feel good. Sometimes they have touched on something on my mind. Rarely though do I hear priests talk about sin especially mortal sin and its effects and the need to go to confession to receive absolution. How come priests are not reminding us of our need to think about final judgement. After all we live in a godless society where anything goes. Also, prayer is not stressed or angels and martyrs heroic deeds are never highlighted. Why is this? Can this be changed?

I know several priests who mention those things. Not every week of course, but very often. Some priests are afraid to challenge people or to have them face certain things.

I am sure priests don’t have problem challenging people to do things, and I am sure priests stress about sins, and others.

However, each priest has his style of giving the homily, and each of the homily is always meaningful - if not to you for a certain topic, it is for others.

Now, as we raise our own kids in our family, would we want the kids to do things because they are afraid of being punished, or would we want them to do things because they love us and they know we love them?

As I thought about this more I realize that Catholics in this country need to come together and stand together in solidarity for our God. Our society has forgotten God. My kids go to public schools and tonight we went to another public school for a girl’s scouts meeting and I saw a banner that read “believe in yourself” but not one single reference to God. Our kids need to believe in God working through them.

Also, I noticed that many of the parents came dressed up sloppy and many women were dressed inappropriately. God wants us to be modest.

We owe our very being and existence to God, our Father and we need to praise and worship him. Maybe the solution is for Catholic churchs to organize teams to visit families and work with them to better understand their faith and develop a strong prayer life. These families should then evangelize to the world. We need to heal ourselves by following God’s will and then reach out and convert as many people as possible and we, Catholic families need to embrace the poor and give them all the love we can.

We have too much abundance and too much earthly goods while many go starving. Let us put complete faith in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to work through us and change our godless society. Amen.

First the Mass is not a service and I think you really should read exactly what the Mass is all about. Its definitely not about a feel good homily!

No - it is not to make us feel good. Sometimes the priest needs to discus our sins and bring them to light. Tell us that society perhaps does not always know best.
