Why don't we hear about sin at mass anymore?

Can others relate to this? The homilies at Mass where I go to church are ALWAYS about stuff like “be nice”, “don’t worry and just do good”, etc. The simple fact of the matter is that we need to hear more about sin and it’s end result hell. I can’t even remember the last time I heard a priest mention mortal sin. Studies show the vast majority Catholics are ignorant of basic Church teaching. Is there anything lay people can do about this?

Sin is not PC. 🙂 I think there are more productive ways to call people to conversion, but that is just an “off the cuff” response.

It would be good to hear from 100 priests on this topic, but their forum is rather exclusive.

So true.

Jesus died to save each and every one of us from hell. I wish we would hear more about it more, and not let his sacrifice go unused for so many people…

If we just go the doctor in confession, all will be well.
 
I didn’t learn of mortal sin until I was 14 years old and that was from MHFM
 
At least two of the priests at my parish preach about sin, repentance and reconciliation quite often, but it’s not like that’s all they talk about. We need a good balance, IMO.

I would say that’s the Catholic Church.

To ignore sins in our life is idiotic. If we desire salvation, spirit growth, and the fulness of divine Love, sin must be acknowledged and absolved.

A perverse focus on sin is absolutely unhealthy, but to ignore it is damning.

I agree! If we heard about confession, how God forgives our sins if we ask, all would be great.

Sure. You can go around talking to people about sin and hell. But then you would have a lot of people walking away from you because they aren’t up for listening to it. It is a real downer. Maybe the priests have it right. Isn’t Mass supposed to be a celebration, after all?

I know how you feel, I feel betrayed by priests tbh, my local church’s homily is " God loves us very much" like every week, I now train it to a traditional latin mass on sunday and their homilies are about sin and leading a life to get to heaven
 
I can understand the need to be told about sin. So that’s valid point.

However, the Church’s focus is on the Good News, to live it out in our lives and about God. Sometimes this teaching can never be enough simply because we do not follow them enough. Thus it has to be the major teachings, or we can say, the positive aspects of the Church.

It is when we fail in them that invariably we will fall into sins.

In other word, sins would let us into separation with GOD. That is why the emphasis is to be with God.

Except for the whole “Sins will not be forgiven at will” thing, most of what he said kinda struck a chord with me. I feel like the vast majority of Catholics are pretty shallow in their practice of the faith, and it’s weakening the Church as a result.
