Why don't we keep kosher?

I have a friend who is a devout Jew. In daily conversation she asked me why, if Jesus was a Jew, we don’t follow Jewish dietary restrictions.

She said that in their teachings, they learned that Jesus said that He wouldn’t change beliefs and customs (other than believing that He is the Son of God).
