My husband was a Baptist and now he claims to just be a Christian…must be all the praying and rosaries I do for his conversion 😃

Anyway…he wants to know how can Catholics be sure that Jesus instituted the Eucharist to be taken every single week. And why he would require us to take Eucharist every single week. Usually, I’m pretty quick in my answers but I kind of came up blank on this one…I told him I would get back with him.

Thanks in advance and God bless

Actually, Christ makes his grace-giving Body and Blood available every day. And who **doesn’t **need lots of grace and intimate communion with Christ?

A Catholic is not obligated to receive it daily, or weekly, but he makes it available. A Catholic is obliged to receive the Eucharist at least once a year during the Easter season.

A Catholic is to attend the Sunday Mass …and Holy Days of obligation…which may or may not mean they will receive the Eucharist.

Jesus said, “As often as you are able, do this in remembrance of me.”

Ok, now I have a question. If I’m not in a state of mortal sin or any reason to NOT receive communion and I chose not to, would I be sinning?

Of course…why would I not want to? I would go to daily Mass every day if I could :p. But he doesn’t quite understand that yet 😉

Thanks

When you are deeply in love with someone, you want to be with them - there are never enough hours in the day or days in the week - when you fall in love with Jesus, you want to be with Him in Mass.

Here’s the Catholic encyclopedia article about frequent communion:
newadvent.org/cathen/06278a.htm

From the introduction:
Without specifying how often the faithful should communicate, Christ simply bids us eat His Flesh and drink His Blood, and warns us, that if we do not do so, we shall not have life in us (John 6, etc.). The fact, however, that His Body and Blood were to be received under the appearances of bread and wine, the ordinary daily food and drink of His hearers, would point, to the frequent and even daily reception of the Sacrament. The manna, too, with which He compared “the bread which He would give”, was daily partaken of by the Israelites. Moreover, though the petition “give us this day our daily bread” does not primarily refer to the Eucharist, nevertheless it could not fail to lead men to believe that their souls, as well as their bodies, stood in need of daily nourishment. In this article we shall deal with (I) the history of the frequency of Holy Communion, (II) the present practice as enjoined by Pius X.

Actually the Eucharist is, I believe, only absolutely required to be taken during the Easter and Lent season. I believe I read that in the First, maybe Second, part of the Catechism.

No. You are only required to take communion during Easter and Lent.

Just to clarify, the this Jesus is referring to is the celebration of the Eucharist, not the reception of the Eucharist.

:D:)👍:o
Wow!! I was on here to get a good reply for my husband and I ended up learning something new. God bless everyone on these forums!! Thank you

Pope Piux X changed the rules to promote frequent communion and published an encyclical to explain the changes.

At the time the Calvinists split the church in the 1500’s, quarterly reception of communion on major holy days was more normative for the faithful- and perhaps folks like modern day baptists and presbyterians inherited that norm from the original Reformed protestants and that could be where they got the idea.

Where did he say that? In the Bread of Life discourse, Jesus compared himself as the manna that came down from heaven. The Israelites at that time ate manna everyday.

No, you’re only required to receive Communion once during Eastertide.
Having the minimum legislated doesn’t mean we should only aim for the minimum. We should always aim to do more in things that are good.

No, but the question was about the requirements.
The OP asked if Jesus instituted the Eucharist to be taken every week. The once a year requirement is Church discipline. However the Church has always encouraged people to receive more often over the years (which includes being properly disposed, so frequent confession as well), not receive less as some would suggest.
