I did not realize that a first class relic is required during canonization. Why is a first class relic used for canonization ceremony? And, what if there is not one? Do, they use a second class relic?

Ist Class Relic is of the person, second Class is not.

In what circumstances would there not be a Ist Class Relic, take the case of JP11, his blood was given back to the Vatican from the Hospital where he had blood samples taken.
Bones would still be found in the grave.

Okay, this could get a little gooey.

I did not pay close attention to the details. Do we know about the relic of John XXIII? I know his body was extremely well preserved – ascribed to embalming rather than incorruptibility, but still: What to do in such case? A fingernail clipping or lock of hair, perhaps?

The narrator I was listening to described the relic of St. John XXIII as a piece of skin, taken when his body was exhumed.
