I know no man knows the day nor the hour when Christ will return. But it’s been almost 2,000 years since the death and resurrection of our Lord. I have a strong faith in Christ, I do. But sometimes I do get doubts because of things like these. I hope and pray Christ returns soon. Perhaps he will. Or perhaps we will have to wait another 2,000 years…

Yeah. Seriously, there are many times that I think, “Jesus, why haven’t you come back yet? Please come back! When will you come?” If there were ever an opportune time for Jesus to come back, it would be now - with all the horrible stuff going on in the world.

When I have thoughts like that I remember that when I was in RCIA the Priest said that even though it has been 2000 years, we could still be at the beginning of the time between his death and when he comes back. We don’t know God’s time frame.

2000 years is not much for the 200000 years of Homo Sapiens lineage.

I believe Jesus will come when the full number of those to be saved have been born. That may not be too many when we consider how many people have died since Adam and Eve. 😉

A Pope has already explained this: see 2 Peter 3: 8-10.

In other words: be careful what you ask for. 🙂

Maybe we need to clean the place up some before he comes back, we’ve made quite the mess of planet earth!

People throughout the ages have been wondering this, thinking their own time was the worst, and why Jesus didn’t come back.

Can you imagine if you were living in the time of the Bubonic Plague and most of the people you knew had died and the chances you would get it were really high? To them, this was the worse time ever to be alive. Why didn’t Jesus come to save them?

Or think of the early Church suffering martyrdom, wondering how soon the Lord would come back and stop the madness?

Or being in the midst of one of many wars and believing this was the worst time in the history of the Earth. Why doesn’t Jesus come back and stop the killing and madness?

The truth is, Jesus will come when He sees fit. We might think we are in the end times, as countless generations before us have, but only He knows that. Only He knows how much worse it can get. The idea is that we are to be ready for any time the Master decides to come home. It doesn’t really matter when He comes. What matters is that we could each meet our own “end times” before He returns, and that is what we should focus on.

Me: “Jesus, why haven’t you come back yet? What are You waiting for?”
Jesus: “What are you waiting for?”

It is not time yet. I hope that it is not time within my lifetime.

Definitely agree! Our monsignor always adds his little " and may it be soon." After until you come again in glory… Gives me a chill, and not a good one!

I hope Christ comes soon, indeed. But at the same time it can be kind of an… overwhelming thought.

Also, priest’s should not be adding things to the liturgy.

I think we all see the AC coming onto the world scene. If you look back thru recorded history and compare it with the very detailed description of the general end times, its easy to see there has never been a time quite like our modern world right now, where so many things have either happened or are happening.

I keep an eye out in the news for any one person that seems to have all the solutions to world problems, I think we will see him pretty soon.

Another very good sign is that Daniels prophecy, people would not be able to understand it unless the ‘times’ were right, we can definitely understand them and relate to them today, so that is something no other time in history can claim either.

It could be another year, or it could be 2,000 more years, but the faithful will always be praying, hoping, and waiting for the Lord to return. Remember this in your hearts. :o

Careful with this kind of reasoning, it didn’t do Daniel Miller or Hal Lindsey any good.

I think the answer may be simple:
  1. God is maximizing the population of heaven. Why stop the Earth ecosystem prematurely if it can still bear more fruit?
  2. God is giving people alive now the chance to repent.
Hence, Jesus will return when the last saint has been born and when the last person who will repent has done so.

Also, we only know what is happening here on Earth. God may have involvements with other creatures in other solar systems; these points may apply to them as well.

Also, we don’t know the details of what relationship God has with animals, insects, other life on Earth. He may be doing something for their sake as well that we don’t know about. It might be Church teaching that the souls of these beings perish at their death, but even so, we don’t know the implication of their lives for the universe that will be reborn/perfected according to St. Paul, and God could always bring them back, even if they ceased to exist from our perspective. After all, if God sees all moments of physical time immediately, then “a few blank frames” (the period of time where something doesn’t exist) “doesn’t matter” to Him, because He can interact directly with them before and after those ‘blank frames’, establishing continuity through Himself.

I may have complicated my simple answer, but I think the two points I enumerated above answer this question: It makes sense for Jesus to “wait” until the population of heaven is maximized. Moreover, didn’t He say in the Gospel that He was “going to prepare a place for [us]”? So if He’s doing something in a spiritual dimension, then perhaps we should get busy doing things in this physical dimension, preparing for our arrival there (i.e. bettering ourselves, working to end injustice, evangelizing our neighbors).
