So your saying that the entire mass is the ordinance or sacrament and not just the communion. So that would mean the the Catholic church just piled everything else on to the communion as what, icing? extra credit? None of the catholic ordinance was developed by christ except for the communion.
falis,

I"m not a Catholic so this is hardly my area of expertise, but I would imagine it is part of respecting what the mass is as the real presence of Christ. It’s akin to Mormons not talking while the sacrament is being passed around, or waiting outside the chapel until the passing of it is through, the order in which it is done, etc. None of that is the actual eating of the bread and water, but accompanies it to signify its importance. Think about it, disfellowshipped and excommunicated Mormons can’t partake, why? LIkewise Catholics think SO HIGHLY of the consecrated bread and wine that they prepare themselves for it even before mass begins, and then more rigorously with everything that goes with the mass. I"m sure every little detail has meaning- you shoudl ask the Catholics about it without attacking them at the outset.

This is one of the worst threads I’ve ever encountered on these forums.

The OP is clearly a troll. The Mass is the Holy Sacrifice of Christ, offered for the remission of sins - in its essence, it can never be insufficient or displeasing, except for one who rejects Christ and his Church.

Also, even in its ordinary form, the Roman Rite contains a wealth of doctrinal exposition. Even if the priest gave a poor homily which failed in offering useful catechesis, the Mass is more than sufficient by itself in expressing Christian doctrine and facilitating true worship.

The rituals of the Mass were developed over the centuries to fully express the faith, enhance devotion, and promote uniformity of belief. The Roman tradition demands our fidelity, out of respect of those who came before us and in affirmation of Christ’s promises for the protection of the Church. The idea that the practices of the early church are the only legitimate ones is an absurd notion which pretends that the Holy Spirit does not guide the Church.

For one, Only Begotten Son means that God fathered Jesus Christ. You don’t believe that. You believe they are the same people and he somehow fathered himself. I’m talking about the english language here. So the catholic church needs to come up with some kind of new english word to clearly convey what you believe about the trinity.
Here’s a prayer from the Mass which explains the Trinity clearly:

“It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to Thee, holy Lord, Father almighty, eternal God: Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one Substance. For what by Thy revelation we believe of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation; so that in confessing the true and eternal Godhead, in It we should adore distinction in Persons, unity in Essence, and equality in Majesty: in praise of which Angels and Archangels, Cherubim also and Seraphim, day by day exclaim, without end and with one voice, saying…”

And you’re telling me the Roman Rite doesn’t offer any doctrine?? You’re speaking out of your arse!

Mass has to be one of the least interlectural meetings in existance. The sermons the priest gives is quite frankly, a joke. Half the time he just begs people to be “good” and to make an attempt to come to church. The words have no substance or value.

The rest of the mass is tradition of sitting down, standing up, sitting down, standing up. It took me 2 times to memorize the entire thing. After the sermon is the “peace be with you” peace be with you". sit down, stand up. It the mass some sort of ordinance of memorized meanings?
The primary purpose of Mass is not to “learn.” The primary purpose of Mass is to worship.

People always log off when I want to post…

The Mass is not a school room. That is what Catechism is for. People learn about the prayers and the theology and the meaning of the Mass and then witness this and experience this during the Mass.

As was said earlier…the Mass is about us worshipping God, not about what we are getting out of it. Granted…for our spiritual journey it would be nice to have a good homily which expounds upon the Scripture readings and to have more people participating which makes it feel more unified.

If you get deep into history the Mass is closely related to the Jewish form of worship, which is where it came from.

The Mass, divided into two parts, begins with the Liturgy of the Word. At daily Mass, this includes an OT reading plus the Gospel and a Psalm between. On Sunday, a NT reading is added. Scripture permeates the Mass in the prayers and in the readings. The Mass transcends time as we enter into the Sacrifice.
CCC197…“The [Nicene] Creed is the spiritual seal, our heart’s meditation and an ever-present guardian; it is unquestionably, the treasure of our soul.”

1-Mass is not Sunday school or priesthood meeting, never has been, never will be, so stop trying to make it something it is not

2-go to RCIA, that is where you will learn about Catholic doctrines

3-try a different parish, 3 or 4 if you like

4-Mormonism has redefined just about every basic Christian word, starting with the word “God”. You cannot use your Mormon definitions to understand Christianity

While I agree that the aim of the Mass is not instruction in the faith, I feel short changed if the homily does not either give me real food for thought or at least introduce me to some new aspect of the gospel reading, make me think about my interpretation of the reading and/or how I should change my behaviour or attitude as a result.

You shouldn’t expect to get ANYTHING out of the Mass. You’re there to worship the Risen Lord, not to be entertained.

The crux of the Mass is the Eucharist…humbling ourselves before the Lord, and following what He asked us to do…completely. “Take this bread and eat it, this is my body, which has been given up for you.”

I will admit, sometimes the sermons can be a bit dry or boring, or downright dull…but, what sets Catholic Sunday worship apart from all other denominations, is the focus upon the Eucharist, and the beautiful way in which we prepare ourselves for it.

I grew up going to Mass, so for me, I love the structure of it, and the participation of it. I have been to non Catholic services, and I feel that as Catholics, we are actually participating in Mass, become active in what’s happening…as opposed to sitting back and being lectured to. To me, that would feel like a class or seminar or something.

Just give it some time, pray for patience and understanding, and for the Holy Spirit to help you cherish your time in Mass…and you will soon learn to embrace Catholic Mass…

God bless.🙂

do you understand that the priest doesnt pick verses out of the Bible for the mass? like others who seek the most exciting verse parts of the Bible so they can get people excited during preaching, you know kind to attract people so they can return the next sunday. most the time they dont even understand what they are saying. it is just pretty speech.

the CC follow a Liturgical calender which is followed for three years. it depends what readings are for the day that is what the priest will talk about it.

The Mass prepares us to go into the world. The Church is Apostolic in the sense that we are “sent forth.” The teachings that we receive come directly from the Apostles as taught by Jesus Christ and protected by the Holy Spirit.

Failism–I do not believe what somebody else tells me about a person’s faith unless that person is a practicing member of that faith. I will not denigrate your faith or say what you believe. I ask that you show me the same respect.
In one of your posts, you complained that the readings are read in full before the explanation. You also stated that you have trouble following the reading by listening. If it helps, the readings are available in the missles in the pews. It is perfectly acceptable to read along. The homily is meant to help explain what has been read. The flow of the reading would be disrupted if the priest stopped at every stanza to explain. There is also the danger that God’s Word would be added to. That is not the purpose of the homily.
As tGette posted, Jesus was a Jew and ours is a Judeo-Christian Tradition.
Our faith and prayers are not limited to the Mass. We are called to live the life that Christ has called each of us to live. We are called to the obedience of faith, to guided by the Holy Spirit.

Falisrm dude, I’ve encountered far too many Mormons with your attitude and you are precisely the sort that encourages a very negative opinion of your faith. If you really want to learn something about Catholicism, of which you are obviously completely ignorant, please go study your own eleventh article of faith for awhile and then come back here with a different attitude.

Have you ever realized that the Eucharistic Sacrifice is a revolutionary and counter-cultural act? Did you know it’s either illegal or just barely tolerated in most of the world?

What effort are YOU putting into learning the faith for yourself?

Is there adult education? Do you attend? Have you asked the priest to offer it? Would you go if he did?

What theological books, such as the Catechism of the Catholic Church, do you read?

I will pass over in silence the grammatical and spelling errors you made in your complaints about things.

4-Mormonism has redefined just about every basic Christian word, starting with the word “God”. You cannot use your Mormon definitions to understand Christianity

Don’t forget–Mormonoids call it “Virgin birth” by courtesy only.

For one, Only Begotten Son means that God fathered Jesus Christ.

**Wrong.

Will that do for starters?

And EVERYTHING the mutants from Kolob do is just ritual, only theirs is empty.**

I would disagree that we should not expect anything from Mass. Since the Sacraments are efficious signs of the Holy Spirit, we can expect to be transformed, to become more Christlike. To worship is “to place ourselves at the service of.” We will not necessarily “feel” the inner change that is taking place within us, but if we truly believe that Jesus Christ is present in the Eucharist, we can also expect that our lives will more fully become a reflection of that life that we receive when we partake of the Eucharist.
I agree the Mass is not a place for entertainment. It is a place of transformation.
