Deborahaz,
The OP is a Mormon. I doubt if he has ever gone to Catholic Church.😦

you know, i am going to stop coming to catholic answers forum if so many mormons come here posing as catholics. there was someone the other day who was saying the were going to RCIA and then the next day posted a thread on why everyone wasn’t mormon!! why do the moderators allow this. i have better things to do with my time that put up with someone’s hoaxes.

Well, it works against them - now that we have seen that they lie to gain our confidence, it doesn’t seem like a very good idea to trust their religion, does it? 🤷

I know, they are very deceptive. But if you look at their profiles, they usually write N/A as their religion. I think it’s a pretty apt description of their religion!!

Mass has to be one of the least interlectural meetings in existance. The sermons the priest gives is quite frankly, a joke. Half the time he just begs people to be ā€œgoodā€ and to make an attempt to come to church. The words have no substance or value.

The rest of the mass is tradition of sitting down, standing up, sitting down, standing up. It took me 2 times to memorize the entire thing. After the sermon is the ā€œpeace be with youā€ peace be with you". sit down, stand up. It the mass some sort of ordinance of memorized meanings?
Go to an Orthodox Church! I’ve never a sermon by an Orthodox priest that didn’t teach me something.

The sermon certainly isn’t the only reason to attend Church, it’s just one part of it.

We also eat the Body and Blood of Our Lord and Savior as He commanded us to do.

In the Orthodox Church the Divine Liturgy has been unchanged for about 1700 years. The most recent change was shortening it a bit from about 2 to 2 1/2 hours to about 1 1/2. The only change before then was shortening it a bit from 3 1/2 hours to 2. The original Divine Liturgy was set up by the Holy Spirit through the Apostle James in Jeruselem.

Hey, btw does anyone know why the Catholics changed the name of the primary liturgical service from Divine Liturgy to Mass?

Always RememberWe must worship God has He wants to be worshipedDon’t go to Church to ā€œget something out of itā€, but to give to God what is God’s***

Mass means to go forth. The liturgy prepares us to go forth into the world and witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The thing that we as the church (which is ALL of US the Believers are the church) need to read the bible. The government of the church is assuming that we are in great zeal for God. One you say that you are a Christian, you better be doing Christian things. Reading your bible everyday staying grounded on the word of God. For Jesus says: That we must be fed by the word of God. For the word of God is what purifies us and sanctifies us.
The mass is a manifestation of the fulfillment of the old testament where all people will come in ONE voice in praise to God. So in American…The mass is supposed to be the pivotal moment where we worship God as ONE body in Christ Jesus.
Unfortunetly, I know a lot of folks who turn away from the Catholic (universal christian faith) to a more bible versed protestant church. They will tell you that they learned more in two weeks about what the bible says and teaches than all the years they went to Catholic schools. I would ask…Did you ever read your bible or go to bible studies??? They all would say well no I never had the time nor did my parents instruct me to do so. As you can see this is a fault of the parents who did not insturct thier son’s/daughters to read the bible. Nor do the parents find time to read the bible.
This is why we as Christians are suffering severely of lack of understanding of the word of God and what he teaches. This is the reason and root of the problem why a lot of Christians fall away or see out other religious vigor. Just by watching Oprah Winfrey and what she believes will cause an influx of people into her/ new age movements agenda.
We as the bride of Christ must MUST MUST read our bibles!!!

Peace be with all of you in the one who makes all things pure as he himself his pure. The Lord is my righteousness!!!

The mass is where I EXPERIENCED that unity like no other time in my life.
I was visiting a foreign country and went to mass.
I didn’t understand a word that was spoken, but I knew exactly what was going on.
1.1 billion in mass … now THAT is the unity scripture speaks of!

Well…consider the Protestant version: You sit for hours listening to one guy ramble on and on. How do you know *he knows *what the heck he’s talking about? Why should you listen to *him? *Why is he so important that you need to just sit there, for HOURS, ingesting his *personal interpretation *of Christianity? I couldn’t do that. No way.

This is a more extended answer to your question. It comes from my Sunday bulletin where the same question was asked.
ā€œā€¦at the conclusion of the Mass, the priest (or deacon) says, in the Latin, ā€˜Ite, missa est.’ Literally, that means, ā€˜Go, it (the Church or congregation) is sent.’ ā€˜Missa’ (dismissal) gradually and eventually became the name for the entire service. That translates into English as ā€˜Mass.ā€™ā€

Mass means to go forth. The liturgy prepares us to go forth into the world and witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Latin - the word, ā€˜missa’ specifically, from which, for example, is derived the English word ā€˜mission’ (as in sending someone out to do something). šŸ¤“
Some additonal info:

It should be noted that it is still called ā€œDivine Liturgy,ā€ we have just developed sort of a ā€˜nickname’ for it.

The word ā€œmassā€ is derived from the Latin ā€œmissa,ā€ which comes from the end of the Mass itself.

The priest says: ā€œIte, Missa Est.ā€ In modern translations, it is translated, somewhat erroneously, as ā€œGo, the mass is ended.ā€ What it LITERALLY means is ā€œGo, it has been sent forth.ā€

ā€˜Missa’ means a sending forth. We see the latin root in words such as dismissal.

Over time, ā€œMissaā€ just became the name of the Liturgy itself. In english, the word became ā€œmass,ā€ in french, ā€œmesse,ā€ etc…

So, Latins do still use the term Divine Liturgy from time to time, but we usually use the term ā€œMass.ā€ So instead of saying we are celebrating the Divine Liturgy, we say we are celebrating the Sending Forth, which is what Jesus did: he sent us forth to proclaim the Gospel, which we do in the Divine Liturgy.

Latins are not the only ones with a ā€œnicknameā€ for the Divine Liturgy: Syriacs use the term ā€œQorbono,ā€ which means ā€œOffering.ā€
